Torii Hunter has been relatively healthy this year, on pace to play his most games in three seasons, and he’s responded with some solid totals. On Sunday, he extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-5 performance with a run and pair of RBI. Hunter was just a home run short of the cycle and has lifted his average from .269 to .280 during the run. Our chief complaint about him is the lack of steals — just six so far after topping 20 in each of the last two seasons, even last year when injuries held him under 100 games played.

So we’ll need to see more to believe he’s out of his slump. Apparently, the problems have resulted because he’s been tipping his pitches. We wouldn’t want to risk it against a hungry Yankee squad and showing-no-signs-of-cracking Detroit team this week. That’s a tall order for Buehrle even if he were on his game, which he clearly hasn’t been in the last month (0-5, 11.48 in July).

Olivo, having a solid year, is already on pace to play 134 games this year and this extra action should garner more interest in him in deeper mixed leagues. Hoover, for his part, is a 30-year-old journeyman catcher who was originally a 23rd round pick by Tampa Bay way back in 1997. He’s gone 4-for-21 in two previous big league stints, the most recent in 2002, and is a veteran of 810 minor league games where his claim to fame is some pretty good speed for a catcher, having once stolen almost 30 bases in one minor league season. Hoover is batting .281 through 80 games at Triple-A this year with a bit of pop (20 doubles and five dingers).

Stokes was plucked out of a Texas high school at the tender age of 18 with power potential splashed all over him. The Marlins opened their wallets for the first-round talent, penning him to a $2.027-million signing bonus. So far, they haven’t exactly gotten much of a return on their investment as injuries have derailed the 6’4”, 225-pound behemoth from advancing beyond Triple-A.

But from a Fantasy standpoint, there are a couple of areas we’d like to see improvement in. Firstly, although Bartlett’s OBP is healthy, he’s actually walking less often than he did last year. But of greater concern is that even though he’s been given the go ahead to run, he’s stolen just one base, getting caught twice. Combine that with Bartlett’s complete lack of power, and you have the makings of an empty .300 hitter.
