The Phils scuffled out of the gates before turning it on in May. But when the June swoon hit, the trade rumours were soon to follow. By early July, the club had fallen 6.5 back in the Wild Card race with a hell of a lot of teams between them and the lead.

The only problem there is Dellucci couldn’t get a hit against a southpaw with a tree trunk, so he’s better suited as a platoon player. Luckily, Victorino hits lefties slightly better than righties. So we suppose the best bet is a platoon, a situation that would increase Dellucci’s value to some extent, but really render both players as Fantasy non factors. We still really like the switch-hitting Victorino’s chances to be a lead-off hitter down the road.

The Braves are another team on which opportunity knocks for any pitcher — especially a reliever — who can actually get anyone out. Atlanta went el cheapo on its bullpen this year, and the results have shown. But it’s created a situation in which unproven pitchers are getting their shot. And some of them have succeeded.

In his 17 starts, the club is just 8-9, thanks in great part to being shut out four times. In all, Seattle has been blanked nine times already — worst in the American League. Maybe the Mariners are trying to tell the old guy something. They might be telling their fans something, too. Seven of those shutouts have come at home (three when Moyer takes the mound). There’s an interesting marketing promotion in there somewhere, I’m sure. How about Mariners’ Goose Egg Day?

But the Phillies’ bats were in absentia most of the weekend, dropping the first two games without so much as a whimper from their supposed mighty lumber. On Monday afternoon, however, they finally erupted to the tune of 11 runs and 17 hits, good enough to beat the Jays into submission 11-6 and avert the sweep.
