Big Shakeup Coming in Boston?

Former Boston Red Sox great Curt Schilling thinks the BoSox may be headed for some major changes unless there’s a turnaround before the All-Star Break.

“I don’t see how this staff makes it to the All-Star break. If they don’t right the ship, if they don’t play four, five or six days of, ‘OK, that’s the team we were talking about a month and a half ago,’ I think there’s going to be some big shakeup,” Schilling told WEEI on Wednesday on the Dennis & Callahan with Minihane show.

“As much as I hate to say it because I love John [Farrell], he’s a dear friend, I think that there is a possibility they clean house at the All-Star break.”

Schilling, who knows a thing or two about cleaning house after his failed video game company cost Rhode Island $75 million — and also likes to speak out against certain politicians (see video below) — says he thinks Boston sees bench coach Torey Lovullo as the successor should Farrell get axed.

With another tough loss Tuesday, Boston has now lost nine of its last 15 to drop to third place in the AL East, a half a game behind the surging Jays. The Sox still hold the second Wild Card slot in the AL, but not for long with Houston really picking up the pace lately.

It’s kind of hard to believe a team that will send a half dozen players to the All-Star Game like Boston is struggling to find consistency, but if it’s not the pitching, the next day, the hitting goes AWOL.

No offense to Steven Wright, but there is no way in hell that this knuckleballer should be top Red Sox starter at the halfway point of the season. Remind us again why Boston shelled out $217 million for David Price, please.

Although he was much better on Tuesday, Price has now surrendered homers in 10 straight starts, which matches the record for consecutive outings with a dinger allowed within the same season by a former Cy Young winner. He’s already matched the number of earned runs he gave up all of last season — in 104 fewer innings. Yuck. Ace? Um, no.

Boston’s top hitter this year (David Ortiz) is in his final season. Hey, Big Papi has earned the right to call it a day after a stellar career, but given that he leads the team in all three Triple Crown categories it’s clear he’s capable of continuing his career after this year, and his departure will have an effect on the Red Sox both from a performance and a spiritual perspective.

Hitting hasn’t been the problem, overall. After all, this team still leads the AL in runs, BA, OBP and slugging. No, it’s all about the pitching here, folks.

The return of Eduardo Rodriguez was supposed to provide a huge boost. Instead, he was simply slaughtered and had to be returned to Triple-A.

Rick Porcello has been much better in his second season with Boston, already surpassing last year’s win total while proving harder to hit than ever. But since his great start (2.76 ERA in April), he’s been rather ordinary at best: 4.67 in May, 3.96 in June and 4.50 in his lone start this month (giving up 12 hits in six innings).

Clay Buchholz has bounced in and out the rotation and has lost his last three starts. The best thing we can say about him is he’s been healthy.

If the BoSox are serious about making a run at another title this year, they will need to add at least one more starting pitcher, maybe even two.

The bullpen has been better, but is still middling at best. Junichi Tazawa continues to be a workhorse, but will he suffer another second half breakdown from overuse like he did last year? It’s a concern.

New closer Craig Kimbrel endured another meltdown on Tuesday, and while his peripherals are solid, he’s been prone to a few too many ugly outings, skewing his bottom line results.

The early-season loss of Carson Smith smarts, but even with his injury, Boston’s revamped bullpen was supposed to be pretty damn good. It hasn’t been.

Given the immense expectations, it will be fascinating to see how things play out in Beantown over the next few weeks.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below what you think will happen in Boston.

Dear RotoRob: Grand-erson Theft Robbery

April 16, 2007 | by James Morris | Comments Comments Off on Dear RotoRob: Grand-erson Theft Robbery
Is Curtis Granderson worth surrendering to get Ben Sheets? Dear RotoRob, I got an offer this week: Curtis Granderson for Ben Sheets. I was a little worried about Sheets’ injury-riddled career, but man when he is on he is lights out. I know his second game was a bit off from his first, but do […]

Notice anything interesting about all this? The fact that every single one of those gems was put up by a rookie leads us to believe that we could soon be entering a new golden age of pitching.

Ozzie Shoots his Mouth off…Again

That’s a lot of star power missing, and with the exception of Schilling, none of those players deserve to be there, but is Guillen in the least bit apologetic that he played a role in leaving some of those future Hall of Famers out of the party?
