After getting dumped 4-1 in Boston on Tuesday, the Devils have now dropped three of their last four, thereby pretty much burning any chance they had of squeaking into the playoffs and pulling off one the most amazing comebacks in league history. Sitting nine points back of eighth place Buffalo (plus with three other teams to pass) with nine games to play, after their nightmare start to the season the Devils’ valiant run over the past couple of months looks like it will be in vain.

In 35 innings last year, he managed 33 strikeouts against just eight walks in compiling a 2.83 ERA. In seven innings this spring, Parnell has racked up six strikeouts while working on a slider to complement his mid-90s heat. A lot can happen in the next two-to-three months and owning Parnell early in 2011 — in what will likely be K-Rod’s final year in New York — could turn into a very solid move.

On the mound you push the right stick down to start your delivery then move it up when you reach the sweet spot — it’s similar to the meter in that if you over or undershoot it you’ll fire a less effective pitch. Angling the stick right or left on the upward motion allows you to locate your pitch. At the plate pushing down has your batter lift and plant his drive leg. Then you push up to start your swing. The trick is timing it so you not only make solid contact with the ball but also so that said contact occurs when your hitters’ weight is shifting.

Where does the blame fall? Fantasy owners definitely have a right to know why this is all happening. Simply put, I believe the many back-to-backs this season along with curious scheduling has created an environment for injuries. Also, players are just dropping like flies because they cannot quite stay in a rhythm. The body is like a temple and if anything disrupts that rhythm, then look out. Another key is that players cannot be at their healthiest 100 per cent of the time either. It is a very delicate balance.

There’s really nothing Braun can’t do on a baseball field. He can hit for average (.307 lifetime BA) and power (he’s smacked at least 25 dingers in all four seasons he’s been in the bigs), he has speed (at least 14 swipes every year), has turned himself into a solid outfielder and has a strong arm. Last year, plenty of his home runs turned into doubles, but he cut his strikeout rate, and given that he’s right in his power prime, it wouldn’t shock me if he made a run at 40 long bombs this year. With relatively little fanfare, Braun is in the early stages of compiling a simply tremendous career, perhaps Hall of Fame worthy in time.
