Jared Walsh is on fire for the Los Angeles Angels.

The Wire Troll: Matt Carpenter Can Still Help

Every year, a certain amount of dudes come out of nowhere to have a major Fantasy impact. Walsh has been a bright light for the Halos, hitting extremely well and earning a place in redraft leagues as well as being a DFS force. He’s riding a nine-game hit streak, scoring and driving in at least one in every game over this stretch. After going 0-for-13 in July and August, he’s put up an OPS of 1405 in September, having already surpassed his 2019 hit total in much fewer at-bats. Another potential two-way player, Walsh is proving too valuable as a hitter to earn any time as a pitcher as he did last year. A stretch of six homers in seven games will do that!

Brady Singer really shone for the Kansas City Royals in his last start.

The Wire Troll: Brady Singer Surges to Prominence

The rookie actually went 7 2/3 IP before he gave up a hit to the Indians as KC’s 2018 first rounder out of Florida gave us an indication of just how good he can be. Singer dodged some bullets in this one, but was generally fantastic. His ERA had ballooned over 5.50 with some rough outings over the last month, but this effort takes him down to a more serviceable 4.66 mark, and — ideally — positions him for a strong finish. The righty was a non-roster invitee this spring, but to its credit Kansas City has given its young pitchers a legitimate shot this season, and he’s generally rewarded the team’s confidence. Having just turned 24 last month, Singer’s best offering is his heater, but he also sports a solid slider and changeup in his arsenal. If he hadn’t struggled early in his junior season, he could have easily gone No. 1 overall two years ago.

Deivi Garcia had a brilliant MLB debut for the New York Yankees.

The Wire Troll: Deivi Garcia Delivers for Yanks

Okay, Cody wasn’t exactly mistake free in his first MLB start on Friday (his walk and errant pick off throw led to a run), yet he wound up giving up just one hit and an unearned run over three frames and still has a perfect ERA with a sweet 0.95 WHIP through four appearances. Cody’s wildness will likely haunt him, but he’s pitched around it so far — not bad for a dude that missed most of the last two seasons because of elbow woes and one that had never before pitched above High-A.

The Wire Troll: Jays Turn to Jordan Romano

Misiewicz is another hurler that has escaped Fantasy owners’ attention so far, but this southpaw rookie has been downright nasty against left-handed hitters (.429 OPS against). He’s proved versatile, pitching very short outings and often going multiple innings, while throwing on a seemingly daily basis. Misiewicz intrigues us with his strikeouts and holds, and if he can induce groundballs as a similar rate to what he did in the minors, he could be a very useful AL-only league asset.

The Wire Troll: Kevin Gausman Comes of Age

Schmidt looked really impressive in Spring Training, so it may be time to see what the 24-year-old righty can do in the Show. The Yankees’ first round pick in 2017 (16th overall) has a tremendous slider, helping him move up last year to Double-A, where he went undefeated and averaged a strikeout per frame in a late-season look. Schmidt is a better dynasty option, but could provide a surprise boost in redraft leagues should he be promoted, which seems likely at some point this season.

MLB Today: Brandon Crawford Losing PT

Crawford was mostly known for his defense early in his career, but he continually got better with the stick, leading to a career year in 2015, when he bashed 21 homers with 84 RBI. The following season, he had career highs in runs, hits, triples, steals and BA, while matching the RBI count. However, Crawford has more or less been in decline since — both at the plate and in the field. He remains a solid gloveman, with a very strong arm, but his advanced defensive metrics have declined dramatically over the last three years.
