Video Game Review: Monday Night Combat

There’s a pretty standard setup at work here, though a couple things feel out of place. The two biggest ones were using the right bumper to reload and having the left trigger aim down sight with some guns and not others — even after several hours I’d still end up tossing bombs when I meant to reload. You’ll also have to familiarize yourself with the face buttons as outside of A (which jumps) they’re different for each class. It’s not tough, but do expect a modest learning curve.

The new characters are selectable for the game’s Escalation mode, and as a G1 fan everyone except Demolisher (who wasn’t part of that series) is an exciting addition. Downloading the DLC unlocks each of their chassis for use during the game’s competitive multiplayer as well, allowing for more choices. Considering the price that the pre-order bonus skins were fetching on eBay, this alone may be enough to convince some to purchase the new content.

Video Game Review: Madden NFL ’11

After keeping basically the same layout for years, there are a handful of changes that long-time players will have to familiarize themselves with. The biggest change during plays is that true dual-stick control has been implemented as the right stick now controls things like leaning into or away from contact rather than canned trucking and juke animations. Turbo has also been removed (however, it can be turned back on in settings), and though it takes a little while to get used to, once you get the hang of it you’ll be creating more rewarding and organic looking runs than ever before.

Video Games: Protector Trials DLC

You begin with a finite amount of ammunition, health packs and EVE hypos, but each splicer kill nets you cash to spend on replenishing your supplies at vending machines. That makes the job of protecting your Little Sister and keeping yourself healthy and fully loaded a balancing act where you’re constantly trying to find an opening long enough to leave your Little Sister unprotected and restock.

All five characters have numerous moves/spells at their disposal, meaning it could take some time to become familiar with all of them. Once you do, however, you’ll be pulling off impressive-looking combos with ease. Clicking the right analog stick cycles through the game’s three zoom settings, and it can also be used to move the camera and check rooms around you.

What some may find distracting is the HUD. The entire screen is bordered in black with either blue or red accents (depending of which team you’re on), and there is what I can best describe as almost a faint honeycomb pattern on the left and right peripherals. Add to that three bars on the lower left (health, sprint, HRV), two on the right (current clip, remaining ammo) and one on the bottom (experience) and it becomes an overly crowded affair.
