Blu-ray Review: Arrival

There’s an interesting story here. Yes, it’s very light on action, but it helps cover up for that with a plot that doesn’t get overly sidetracked in the scientific minutia (we’re looking at you, Interstellar) and grounds itself in human emotion. Maybe it’s a little optimistic in the way countries work together, but there’s ample drama and a really interesting swerve to boot.

Blu-ray Review: Quarry: Season 1

Quarry does dark, and it does it well. There are no “good guys” here. Mac is a killer who left his wife to do a second tour in Vietnam without even discussing it with her. Jodi is unfaithful and still resents Mac for leaving (and for his own infidelity). The Broker seems calm and businesslike, but there’s more to him than just being a facilitator. It’s a quality job of layering the characters.

Video Game Review: Double Dragon IV

Whether you’re talking about presentation, controls or tactics, Double Dragon IV absolutely nails the old-school feel. In fact, its strict adherence to the source material is to its detriment. The problems start with the controls, which remove anything resembling precision from the equation and make you feel ponderous and awkward — two essential traits of any martial arts expert.

Blu-ray Review: Masterminds

Considering all of the talent involved in Masterminds, it’s disappointing that it isn’t funnier. Wiig is one of our favourite comedians, but she’s left to flounder in what is largely a straight role outside of a few silly bits early on. Likewise, fellow SNL actress Kate McKinnon plays the same uncomfortably weird character she did in Ghostbusters — we’re talking nearly verbatim minus the science angle.

Blu-ray Review: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Jack Reacher is an easy character to root for. He’s clever, resourceful and knows how to kick an ass or six at any time. Cruise handles the “fish out of water” pseudo parenting well, creating plenty of lighter moments to keep the story upbeat. His stunt work and high impact fighting sequences are top notch, though there are times when it feels like the line is blurring between Reacher and Mission Impossible’s Hunt.

Video Game Review: Yakuza 0

As enjoyable as the combat can be, the strength of Yakuza 0 lies in its storytelling, unfurling a pair of compelling tales that serve as a great entry point into the series (or simply another layer of depth for longtime fans). For all the goofiness that permeates other aspects of the game, the main storylines are mature and well told.
