Thanks to yet another Blogtalkradio SNAFU this week’s episode of RotoRob’s Fantasy Baseball Weekly Podcast was almost deep sixed. If not for a yeoman effort by Chris Wassel to save the day, the show would have been toast. As it was, we got underway about 40 minutes late. D’oh! But hey, we made up for lost time by churning out some crazy good chatter.

It is tough not to rank the reigning Vezina winner number one but, hey, just watch us. Why? The late season swoon Lundqvist had was too much to ignore. In Fantasy crunch time (from March on), he posted a meager .895 save percentage and was well rested. Add in the burdens of being a new father and you have to wonder how he will respond. Lundqvist did end up with 39 wins and a .930 save percentage last season — not too shabby. With the shortened schedule, he could see around 38-to-40 starts and produce Vezina-caliber numbers.

It was tough to drop Byfuglien given he had 53 points in just 66 games but Karlsson’s rise was too hard to ignore and Weber should be allowed to play “full out” in a 48-game schedule. Byfuglien’s team has a tougher travel schedule than most and that may play a factor. However, the guy can shoot the puck and be a force on both sides of the ice. He also plays a punishing brand of hockey like our No. 1 defenceman. That alone allows Byfugline to maintain at least a top three spot in our rankings.

This is the case where a pivot could benefit from injuries very quickly. Baertschi has talent that is well documented and just seems to succeed wherever he goes. The question becomes does he wind up on the first or second line? That will make a slight difference as far as his production but honestly little else. Expect Baertschi to put up a nice solid rookie campaign and garner some Calder consideration. A point total is hard to project with him but let’s just say he is going to have opportunities to impress.

When you look at the salary and what the defenseman is expected to do in Minnesota, you have two different projections. That is just how it is. The translation of 40-to-45 points over an 82-schedule is about a 24-to-28 points over 48 games. Suter may fall below those numbers as the pressure of playing as the big defensive guy take its toll. The goals and points may be there, but they will fade late.

How much of that upside he taps into this season will depend on who the talented forward plays with, but a top six role is very likely which means a nice jump in points and a potential for a second half surge. Fantasy owners want to keep an eye on when Tarasenko goes in your draft because next season the story will be much different.

If VC stays aggressive like this, the points will come. No, he’s not sinking as many shots from beyond the arc of late, but that’s because he’s driving to the hoop. We like his chances of maintaining consistent scoring with the latter approach.
