Given all of the different controls, there probably is a way to create a more refined solution — using the face button to fire does feel a little outdated but it’s not something that necessarily brings the game down as long as you give yourself time to adjust. Fortunately, the first game presents a bit of a ramp-up learning curve to get used to this, along with an interactive (and somewhat redundant) tutorial. The second game, though, is a little more feet-to-the-fire in its approach, at least in terms of difficulty.

Video Game Review: Silent Hill: Book of Memories

There are two flaws that really hold the controls back. First off, dodging is way too slow compared to these enemies. You cannot react once a foe starts their attack; you have to predict when they’re going to attack and use it beforehand. Eventually you will get a sense of when they will attack, but it is hard to be certain and often forces deciding whether to get less hits in on the enemy or risk taking damage.

Video Game Review: Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation

Seated atop the list is the use of the Vita’s rear camera. Periodically you’ll be asked to point the lens at a “bright light” and then rotate an object on the touch screen to reveal a hidden location, which will then move the story forward. It’s absolutely broken. I took my Vita outside and pointed the rear camera at the sun (THE SUN!) and it didn’t register as a bright enough object. Eventually I found that if I moved the Vita around for a while something would trigger the event and I’d be able to move forward.

Video Game Review: Of Orcs and Men

As you’re breaking backs and showering daggers into your foes, you’ll be escorting your heroes from locale to locale, occasionally stumbling across a treasure and taking control of whichever character suits the situation. For example, small and tight areas may require Styx’s size and stealth for infiltration. However, the game never truly opens up, which makes it always feels like you’re traversing through corridors, making exploration overly dull and linear for an RPG.
