Fantasy Hockey Roundtable: Struggling Centres

I don’t think things will turn around for Eric Staal. He’s got no one around him in Carolina and you can see it in his numbers. Also, perhaps more interestingly, Staal is getting plenty of shots off, so it’s not like he doesn’t have the opportunity to score. The shots he’s taking just aren’t lighting the lamp. And that seems to signal he might have lost a step or two.

Ice Chips: Best of the Worst

The media might be focusing on the good stories this year, like the Los Angeles Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes. However, there are plenty of disappointing teams out there, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some Fantasy gems on those non-playoff squads. Let’s take a look at some of the best Fantasy players on some of the worst teams out there.

The Wire Troll: Freeze Frame?

As many hockey fans know, this weekend is the start of the Christmas Roster Freeze. Simply put, it means players cannot be moved (via the trade or waiver route) until after December 25. There are players that are probably sitting on your waiver wire and you are mulling whether or not to pluck them. Well, this is a very good question that many are pondering this time of year. Keep in mind that in the case of public leagues, you really (in most cases) do not know who you are playing. However, most times you do know your opponents or have an idea about their strategy. If the latter is the case, then follow this simple mantra: “Be quick or be dead.”

Fantasy Hockey Roundtable: Drop Them While They’re Hot

The hot player I’m considering dumping is Stephen Weiss from the Florida Panthers. He’s coming off a December 2 hat trick and has five goals in his last five games. He’s got 13 goals and 11 assists in his first 31 games. Weiss is having a career season. Amazingly, he’s never scored more than 20 goals in a season and he’s never had more than 48 points. One school of thought says Weiss will continue to sizzle, but I’m guessing, as the Panthers continue to struggle, his production will return to his usual low-to-average levels. There’s nothing in his history to suggest he’s about to evolve into an offensive superstar. Weiss is doing well right now, and some Fantasy owners are probably cashing in on his recent hot streak, but I’m betting this is all just an illusion.

The Wire Troll: Many Happy Returns

With just a little over two weeks until Christmas, we figured it would be time to announce some returns that may be on your Fantasy waiver wire. Some are going to generate a considerable amount of controversy while others will just be good to have back. Imagine the Fantasy owner who has seven or eight guys on the IR and their joy to see one or even two guys coming back. The thrill of being able to get a full roster to go to war for you even for a night or two can be a bastion in a very long Fantasy season.
