Saving Grace: Fuentes Back on Track

On Sunday, he gave up just his second run as closer, but still managed to hang on for a shaky save. The prevailing wisdom out there is that you have to be a closer on a winner to get lots of saves. That has been proven wrong time and time again, but people still spout it like it’s gospel. Johnson is a fine option in all leagues. Yes he’s going to get less chances than most because the Orioles will win less games than, say the Yankees, but there is no reason he can’t rack up a good number of saves in the meantime as long as he makes the most of his opportunities. And bear in mind that weaker tends tend to be involved in closer games when they do actually win, so virtually every W may result in a save chance.

Daily Dump: Kelly Johnson

After taking two of three from the Florida Marlins on the weekend, the Atlanta Braves have now moved into sole possession of second place in the NL East. They’re just a half game behind the Giants in the NL Wild Card race, but Wild Card leader Colorado continues to surge, and has put 4.5 games between itself and Atlanta. And despite the fact that the Braves have played well lately, the Phillies have been that much better, opening up a seven-game bulge in the East.

Cub Bullpen Woes

The Cubs’ most recent skid – combined with the Cardinals continuing to roll – has seen the NL Central deficit grow to eight games for Chicago. Houston, playing a bit better lately, has pulled within two games, even threatening the Cubs’ grip on second place in the division.

Another Look: Randy Wells

The 26-year-old won five games in July, and has sported an even lower ERA this month, despite taking one serious ass-kicking in Coors. Wells started the month by pitching shutout ball into the eighth inning in Cincy, good enough for him to win his fourth straight start. Then came the beat-down in Colorado, but since then he’s responded with back-to-back quality outings, including 6 2/3 innings without an earned run allowed in a tough-luck loss Friday night.
