Giambi was ridiculously productive in limited action in May, and continued to deliver in slightly more action in June, but the jig is up as his improved play has not translated into any extra opportunities.

He singled and scored Wednesday, running his current hitting streak to 10 games. Okay, he hasn’t exactly been white hot (just three multi-hit efforts in this stretch), but he does have five doubles, two triples, 11 runs and six RBI. Not too shabby.

The fact that he can play every infield position (he’s even seen seven games at first this year) means that the 35-year-old should stick around, even though he really can’t hit to save his life (although he’s at least getting on base more often than last year when he recorded a ridiculously low .266 OBP).

However, in the two weeks and change since he returned, Zimmerman isn’t exactly lighting it up. He was 0-for-4 Friday and has managed more than one hit just once in the past 11 games, recording just three extra-base hits during this stretch.

People will ask why the Flyers did not take the promising Hamilton, who seemed to address everything the team required to restock arguably the franchise’s greatest need. The simple answer here is they went with the best player available. While Hamilton could easily turn out to be an absolute gem of a defenseman, Couturier’s pedigree screamed out at the Flyers. He has size (6’4”, 195), skill and is defensively complete as a forward. Couturier hits, fights, and has great vision.

Hell, he’s nearly on pace for a 20-homer/20-steal season, and those don’t grow on trees, so Cabrera has become a must-own Fantasy asset since donning a Royal uniform. Who the hell saw this one coming? This is the same player that had just four homers and 42 RBI in 458 at-bats for the Braves last year, right?

Meanwhile, Jennings continues to rake at Triple-A, going 3-for-5 Saturday to push his June BA well over .300. For the season, he’s batting .280 with 54 runs, a somewhat surprising 10 homers and an 831 OPS in 72 games. Jennings has only stolen 14 bases (a disappointment after he combined for 89 the past two seasons), but he’s picked up the pace with five so far this month and has only been caught once all season.
