Review: NHL Gamecenter Live 2014-15 App

The new NHL season is upon us, and with it, fans are inundated with advertisements to purchase NHL Center Ice (the TV package) or NHL Gamecenter Live (its online counterpart). For years, Center Ice was the most convenient way to get wall to wall NHL action. However, in recent years the functionality of NHL Gamecenter has propelled it to the forefront. The new iteration of Gamecenter is upon us, which leaves two big questions. First, is it any different from last year’s version? Second, is it worth your money?

2014-15 RotoRob NHL Draft Kit: Top 10 Sleepers

Sleepers are fun because not only can they make or break your Fantasy hockey season, but you’re also bound to get some interesting reactions from other Fantasy GMs. Hopefully, because you’re reading RotoRob.com’s Fantasy content religiously — as you very well should if you aren’t already — those reactions will be of disbelief and jealously rather than guffaws and scorn. Onward.

2014-15 RotoRob NHL Draft Kit: Goalie Rankings

Touted as one of the best young goalies in the league, Quick proved it to the world with an incredible campaign in 2011-12. In an astounding 69 regular season games, the Milford, Connecticut native amassed 35 wins, a 1.95 goals against average, a .929 save percentage and 10 shutouts. The thing is, he wasn’t done — not by a long shot. In 20 postseason games, Quick added 16 wins, a 1.41 goals against average, a .946 save percentage and three shutouts in capturing the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP. The only man standing in the way of Quick and the Vezina was none other than Lundqvist mentioned above. Quick’s numbers have fallen off a bit the past few seasons, but he’s still a winner and was able to add another Cup to his credit. If Rask and Lundqvist are gone, we’re pretty sure you’ll be happy with Quick.

Many experts have him No. 1, but as we discussed in the intro, we think Rask and Niemi get the edge based on their schedules. The King is one of the best goalies in the game and he proved it again last year, even though his GAA inched back over 2.00. What a stiff! Look for him to again log tons of action, probably around 65 games, a figure he topped five straight years before 2011-12.

The only real significant change in controls comes from the swing mechanic. This manifests in two forms. First, for your player, you can customize your swing style — power or control, swing shape, shot trajectory, and favoured hand. EA Sports has implemented this for real player profiles as well, so virtual PGA champions will swing and hit much like their real-world counterparts.

Product Review: NHL GameCenter App (PS3)

Let’s get to the biggest attraction in GameCenter — live streaming of every NHL game, in many cases with both home and away feeds. If you’ve used GameCenter on a web browser, you know the interface can be a little clunky at times. Fortunately, the PS3 version is actually fairly streamlined. After loading the app, you get a catalog selection of each of the day’s games, along with viewing options. You can view the home feed, away feed, a condensed version of the game (usually edited down to 10-to-15 minutes), or a highlight package. If you’re joining in during the game, you have the option to watch the game live or start from the beginning, and if it’s after the fact, all of the aforementioned viewing options are available. Note that the highlights and condensed versions do take some time to be made available.
