Yes, it makes sense that a ship that is being torn apart while its orbit is destabilizing would be blowing up, but that doesn’t make the constant shaking of the screen any less annoying. Plus, adding a shaking screen on top of dimly lit corridors and view-obstructing overhangs can create frustrating moments.

The majority of your time is spent traveling down a linear path and disposing of the underground village’s automated defenses — consisting of previously encountered foes like undead wolves and Hobbes. Eventually all this combat ends in a boss fight against a brand new enemy. It looks pretty cool, but like the Wheel of Misfortune, if you’ve already beaten the game you’re going to be strong enough to simply steamroll right over it.

Everything moves along at a crisp rate even as you unload upon dozens (and sometimes hundreds) of living dead as they swarm onto the screen from all angles. With so many enemies to deal with at once, however, the game pulls the camera back a fair amount to show more square footage. While I think it’s a necessary step, it does create the side effect of making it difficult to see stragglers, which can lead to some cheap and frustrating hits.

The largest of the newcomers, Breakpoint adds the obligatory snow-based map that veterans of the series (read: me) have been missing. It elicits some flashbacks to Sidewinder/Avalanche, though this map has more structures and fewer wide open areas. There are lots of vehicles (banshees, warthogs, ghosts and wraiths) and heavy weapons available here, making for some massive firefights. Those that prefer a more covert approach should appreciate the multiple paths available, which allow you to move from one area of the map to the other with limited exposure to enemy artillery.

Audiophiles will no doubt love the booming sounds of battle, which are unapologetically delivered with tangible impact. Explosions thunder through the speakers and enemy gunfire whizzes by as you engage dozens of hostiles, adding to the game’s manic approach along with a soundtrack that matches the intensity of the sound effects every step of the way.

The backgrounds and environments are standard, not spectacular, especially considering how detailed we’ve seen games in the past year or two. Enemies are generic, details such as snow and weather flicker on and off, and even cut scenes have glitches where environment texture details load seconds after they come on screen.
