The surrounding world is pure fantasy. It has a homespun, almost kitschy feel with floating levels of blocks set against a background where strange creatures and unusual stuff (like a bear flying around in a gigantic paper airplane) becomes commonplace.

The little skull creatures that you play as are fairly adorable in their various outfits with dragons, ninjas, knights and more. They have a cartoony colourfulness that is often in direct contrast to some of the difficulty spikes you’ll find sprinkled throughout the game. Backgrounds are bright and vibrant with minimal detail, though there’s certainly enough to distinguish between desert and snow levels.

About 90 per cent of the time you’ll be using the left analog stick and “A” button, which allows you to pick up and drop objects. It’s a fine system, though eventually things get overcrowded and it becomes a bit annoying to constantly be cycling through the items you can lift. The camera is also limited. You cannot rotate a full 360 degrees, nor can you switch to a true top-down view. Early on it doesn’t matter, but once your lands are full of buildings and Keflings there are times you’d like to be able to see more clearly behind objects.

Rockstar’s formula of mixing a main story with side missions is present along with a bevy of challenges to fulfill, towns to rescue, graveyards to clear and much more. In keeping with the theme, several mythical creatures have been added, including Sasquatch, the four horses of the Apocalypse and even a unicorn that you can ride. In short, there’s a ton to see and do.

Some two decades later, an “authentic” version has been released. How has it aged? Not well. Not well at all, and really, there could have been a little bit done to make this a much more enjoyable experience. As it stands, this is probably one of the worst gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
