The Wire Troll: Luis Castillo to the Rescue

Three years ago, Alvarez was just 24 and in the midst of a breakout season in which he recorded a 2.65 ERA en route to earning Cy Young consideration. The following year, he made just four starts and shoulder woes have kept him sidelined since. Well, he’s healthy now, putting on a showcase for MLB teams this weekend as he aims to get a chance to make a comeback. Given his still tender age, pedigree and tremendous control, Alvarez is worth tracking as we see how this plays out. Who knows? This Venezuelan could be a surprise source of value in the second half given how many teams need pitching help.

The Wire Troll: Sandy Alcantara Turning Things Around

Another top prospect that’s recently gotten the call, Chapman’s arrival has coincided with the A’s starting to heat up, and yes, these two events are clearly connected. He drew two walks and scored a run in his debut, got a hit and three RBI in his second game and then had two hits, including his first double, and a run in Game No. 3. The Wire Troll: It’s Almost Gleyber Torres Time

As we enter the time of the year when prospects begin to get called up, it’s time once again to consider Fulmer. The eighth overall pick in 2015 has great strikeout potential, averaging nearly 8.5 Ks per nine over his minor league career, although that number has dipped this season. Fulmer ended May on a rough note, but has really come on so far this month. Ulis needed ankle surgery after the regular season, but it was minor, and he’ll be ready to go for training camp.

After setting career highs in goals and points last season, Granlund obliterated all his personal bests this season en route to being named a finalist for the Lady Byng Award. His 69 points tied for the fourth highest total in Wild franchise history as the ninth overall pick from 2010 really came into his own. If you were astute enough to grab Granlund off the wire some time in the first month and a half of the season, you were incredibly well rewarded.

The Wire Troll: Jed Lowrie on Fire in Oakland

Even though it slipped last year, Anderson has always had solid command. And although he had really struggled in his previous five starts, he reminded us Saturday that he’s a pitcher that needs to be on your radar, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning en route to seven shutout innings of one-hit ball with 11 strikeouts against one of the top hitting teams in the bigs (Arizona). Anderson is durable, and in well on his way to shattering his career high in innings pitched, so give him a look if you need pitching help.
