As they have done so many times in the postseason, the Tampa Bay Rays were beginning to look like a team of destiny. After walking into Texas Monday and dumping the Rangers 5-2 in the tiebreaker to clinch the second AL Wild Card spot, the Rays headed to Cleveland Wednesday and shut down the Tribe 4-0 to earn a place in the ALDS.

The trick was turned twice in the 1930s, once in the ’40s, three times in the 1950s and once each in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. The Cards won the game, 7-6, when Jon Jay — who had already smacked a three-run homer earlier — drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and Edward Mujica finished it off with a perfect bottom of the ninth. Allen Craig also went yard for the Cards.

After a dreadful first half in which he spent more than two months on the DL dealing with a gimpy hamstring, Ramos has taken his game to a new level in the second half. Solid performances in both July and August have been followed up by a September in which he’s exploded — bashing six homers with 23 RBI. He’s played a huge role in Washington’s late-season surge and has the potential to be a force at his position for many years to come.
