Video Game Review: Joe Danger

Although the game chooses to slowly introduce the various controls during the career mode, everything is so responsive and intuitive that it really isn’t necessary. After just a few games you’ll be pulling off back flips and waving to the crowd as you soar through the air. My lone quibble is that it feels a bit odd to switch from the throttle (R2) to the L1/R1 buttons to perform aerial stunts, but it’s something you’ll get used to as you play more.

Although there’s nothing wrong with the way the old three-button Genesis control scheme has been mapped to the Xbox 360 (I like that both “X” and the trigger fire), the game itself feels most outdated here. There are just too many things you can’t do; like the inability to fire your gun while in the air or to jump vertically from a hanging position. Is it authentic to the original? Yes. Does that make it less frustrating? No. Fans of the series know what they’re getting into, but newcomers may find these limitations archaic.

Video Game Review: Soldner-X 2 Final Prototype

Your ship handles extremely well, allowing you to safely bob and weave through streams of enemy projectiles. The R1 shoulder button is used to cycle through your three available weapons, but all other functions are mapped to the face buttons. You’ll pretty much hold down “X” throughout — in fact, the game suggests as much early on — and that fires your primary gun. Beyond the three functions of your main gun, there’s also a shockwave and a screen clearing limit attack.

I won’t even attempt to lay out the complexities of the combat system here. Just understand that button mashing is going to do nothing except get you knocked out or submitted in short order. There is an available tutorial that helps lay the groundwork, but the only way to become proficient here is by getting in the octagon and practicing. Log enough time and you’ll get comfortable, though even after more than a week with the game I wouldn’t say things are second nature.

Video Games: Resurgence Pack DLC

Visually this map is a lot of fun with all the signature accoutrements of the stereotypical trailer park, including discarded beer cans and kegs, plastic flamingos and even a lawn gnome. It’s so authentic you can practically smell the bologna frying! However, despite the fun setting, the fighting here tends to be pretty straightforward in that you’ll either need to embrace moving methodically and checking corners or get killed a lot. That’s because with so many trailer interiors and random debris to conceal enemies this is a camper’s paradise. It’s not a bad map, but it’s the weakest of the new offerings.

Video Game Review: Alpha Protocol

The actual layout of the controller doesn’t take long to become accustomed to, but that doesn’t mean it’s always smooth sailing. The sensitivity of the left stick is a constant hassle, both with moving around and aiming your gun. Considering you’re supposed to be a stealthy bad ass, those aren’t the best areas to be having difficulty. The too-close camera further exacerbates the issues.
