MLB Today: Evan Gattis Heating Up

John Kennedy swiped a ton of bases for the Nyack Warriors.
John Kennedy was probably the best player the Nyack Warriors ever produced. (

Before we delve into what caught our eye in MLB action on Wednesday, a quick word is in order about the great career that John Kennedy enjoyed for the Nyack Warriors playing NCAA Division II baseball.

He led DII in steals per game as a redshirt senior this season, capping a career in which he ranked second in this category as a freshman and sixth as a sophomore. Kennedy finished with school career records in hits (224), runs (155) and steals (170). He swiped 64 bags as a freshman which set a new CACC record in the DII era.

It’s a much tougher road to pro ball for DII players, but who knows? Maybe Kennedy can buck the trend.

Okay, onto Thursday’s observations…

Evan Gattis missed some time earlier this season to injury and a minor league demotion (to get him some work behind the plate), but he’s really heating up now. On Wednesday, he spanked his 20th homer of the season, hitting the mark for the fourth time in his four-year career. In regaining catcher eligibility that he lost heading into the season, Gattis has become a much more attractive Fantasy option not only for this season, but heading into 2017. He’s 8-for-19 over the last six games and is now hitting almost .300 in August, his best month of the season from a slash line perspective. As mentioned, Gattis hasn’t seen as much action this year, so he’s probably not going to match his counting cat numbers from 2015, but dudes that mash 25 or more homers and qualify at catcher sure have value in this game. Check out Gattis’ serious power — even from Winter League — in the video below. It’s worth watching just to hear the announcer’s over the top reaction.

Ryan Braun’s leg issues seem to be behind him as he delivered his third multi-homer game of the month. His BA has slipped a bit lately, yet he’s still managed four runs over the last three games. With 10 homers already in August, Braun is enjoying his finest month of the season, especially after he managed just one jack in July. He’s had a tough time staying healthy in recent seasons, but this is turning out to be his finest effort since 2012. Milwaukee is reportedly listening to trade offers for Braun, so his recent mashing is only helping to increase that interest.

Speaking of Milwaukee-related outfielders, remember all the gloom and doom predictions regarding Khris Davis when he was traded from the Brewers to the A’s? Um, ya. About that. On Wednesday, he had another two hits, including a triple, and has now piled up four runs in the last two games while batting .391 over the last week. Davis is also enjoying his best month of the year, batting .296 with a 990 OPS as he continues to build on his fine 2015 campaign. He’s hitting even better this season while further developing his power so how he’s not a must-own at this stage is completely beyond us (owned in 74.4 per cent of ESPN leagues).

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below how many home runs you think Evan Gattis will wind up with this season.
