Francois Beauchemin 2015-16 Outlook

Today we wrap up our look at the key free agent defencemen signings with an examination of Francois Beauchemin’s deal with Colorado.

The Contract: Three years, $13.5 million with the Colorado Avalanche.

Last Season: 11 goals, 12 assists, +17, 48 penalty minutes and 110 shots in 64 games.

Analysis: We’re not huge fans of Colorado’s signing of Beauchemin to a three-year deal. While the term is relatively short, he will be 38 when the contract expires. Given that the Avalanche was in desperate need to improve its defense to get back in a playoff spot, we feel like there were better options. Beauchemin put up only 23 points last season and, given his age, we think Colorado will have to be looking for another top four defender soon. (So while you can, check him out in an Avs’ uni in the video below.)

Fantasy Impact: Beauchemin heading to the Avalanche might lower his point total a little because Anaheim was such a high-scoring team and — last season at least — Colorado was not. The Ducks ranked 10th in goals while the Avalanche was 21st. However, we don’t think that his point total will be too affected by switching teams, but rather that it will drop because last season his shooting percentage was more than double his career average.

In the graph below, we purposely excluded Beauchemin’s 2008-2009 season because he only played 20 games and a small sample size like that would skew the data.

Shooting Percentage Season-By-Season

Year Shooting % Average Shooting %
2005-2006 6.60% 5.20%
2006-2007 5.50% 5.20%
2007-2008 1.40% 5.20%
2009-2010 2.90% 5.20%
2010-2011 4.70% 5.20%
2011-2012 6% 5.20%
2012-2013 8.10% 5.20%
2013-2014 4.00% 5.20%
2014-2015 10% 5.20%

Last season, if Beauchemin shot his career average shooting percentage of 5.2, he would scored about five or six goals (instead of 11), dropping his overall point total down to 17 or 18 instead of 23. Throughout his career, he has only topped 30 points once and that was with the Blue Jackets in 2005-2006 (twice if you assume he wound have done so in the lockout season, when he recorded 24 points in only 48 games).

Another worry is that Beauchemin isn’t a safe bet to play all 82 games this season. In the past two seasons, he’s missed a combined 30 games. Even though he will be given a top four role in Colorado, we don’t think he’ll even break 20 points this season (assuming he doesn’t play all 82 games). Beauchemin shouldn’t be counted on by Fantasy owners as a source of points this season.

Projection: Five goals, 13 assists, -2, 42 penalty minutes, 104 shots in 68 games.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below how you see 2015-16 playing out for Francois Beauchemin.

Matt Beleskey 2015-16 Outlook

October 5, 2015 | by Scott Maran | Comments Comments Off on Matt Beleskey 2015-16 Outlook
If Boston still has any hopes of making the playoffs, it needed a top nine forward. But how many points should we expect Beleskey to put up and how valuable of a player is he?

NHL Free Agency Recap: Goalies

October 4, 2015 | by Scott Maran | Comments Comments Off on NHL Free Agency Recap: Goalies
We always thought of Enroth as the Sabres’ goalie of the future and believed he had the potential to be a starter in the NHL. Considering how cheap the Kings signed him for, we think they were able to sign a solid backup for a very team-friendly price. However, we don’t like this deal from Enroth’s perspective for reasons we will get into below.

NHL Free Agency Recap: Forwards

October 1, 2015 | by Scott Maran | Comments Comments Off on NHL Free Agency Recap: Forwards
Going into free agency, we thought Beleskey’s contract was going to be atrocious. There were reports that he was asking for seven years and he turned down a four-year, $16 million contract offer from the Ducks. However, we were quite surprised at how low the cap hit was when it was announced that Boston had signed him. We think the term was one year too long, but overall, it’s a decent contract. If Boston still has any hopes of making the playoffs, which it said it does, it needed a top nine forward.

NHL Free Agency Recap: Defensemen

September 25, 2015 | by Scott Maran | Comments Comments Off on NHL Free Agency Recap: Defensemen
We think Green will continue to provide a lot of offense for Fantasy hockey owners and might actually improve his point totals on the Wings if he stays healthy. He has shown in previous seasons that he can be one of the league’s most dominating offensive blueliners and we think he will build on last season’s performance. Even though Green won’t be on the absolute best Power Play in the league anymore, he will surely be quarterbacking Detroit’s dynamic unit. Last season, the Wings’ Power Play was second best in the league with a conversion rate of about 24 per cent (Washington clicked about 25 per cent of the time). Also, both teams scored a similar amount of goals last season (Washington 242, Detroit 235).
