Wire Troll: One More From the Road

Gooden has been one of Fantasy’s biggest duds this season, but his lack of production has been due almost entirely to a bout with plantar fasciitis. He had missed 32 straight games before returning to the court March 28, but he was able to shake off the rust rather quickly. The veteran pulled down 11 rebounds and racked up 22 points in just his second game back — though it’s worth noting that his big line came against the woeful Raptors’ defense. If he can stay healthy, Gooden should be at least a modest source of points and boards the rest of the way, and he’s worth adding deeper Fantasy formats. Note: Gooden is not eligible at centre in ESPN leagues.

The Wire Troll: After the Love is Gone

Over his last four games, the rookie has played at least 29 minutes — while averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and an outstanding 2.8 blocks. If you’re short on swats, consider grabbing Udoh for the stretch run… but be aware that he is still very much a work in progress, and his playing time could evaporate quickly if Smart decides to try out something else.

The Wire Troll: Playoff Prep Time

Monroe has been on an outstanding roll since the All-Star break, averaging 15.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals in his first nine games. With the Pistons’ playoff hopes all but dead, there’s little reason for the team to limit the rookie’s minutes as the season winds down, so double-doubles should be the norm for Monroe down the stretch. Those numbers won’t help the woeful Pistons, but they could bring you a Fantasy championship. Monroe is available in about one-third of Yahoo! leagues, but only about 10 per cent of ESPN formats. If he’s out there, grab him.

The Wire Troll: Has Ant-Rand’s Time Come at Last?

March has come in like a lion for the athletic Randolph, as he is finally, at long last, seeing enough court time to become Fantasy relevant. So far this month, the former Warrior and Knick is averaging 11.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, but the big story is that he has logged almost 52 minutes over his last two games. Randolph has the tools to succeed in the NBA, and the Wolves appear to be willing to give him a chance to show his stuff. If he can remain focused, Randolph could become a bona fide Fantasy force, but for now he’s just a speculative add in deeper formats. Keep an eye on this situation, though.

The Wire Troll: Deadline Headlines

Kaman posted 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots on Friday, and could be a threat to move back into the starting lineup in the next few games. His skills on the offensive end elevate his game above Jordan’s, and the Clips definitely need help on that end of the floor. If Kaman is available in your league, he’s definitely worth adding; he should produce useful big-man stats even while playing in a reserve role.

The Wire Troll: Melo-Drama at the Deadline

As the trade deadline approaches, Murphy is very likely to be headed out of Joisey to Parts Unknown. What is known is that no matter where he lands, he’ll see an increase in Fantasy value — mainly because he’s as close to the bottom of the Fantasy barrel as one can get at this point. Murphy has not played since January 7, and never looked like a good fit with the Nets. Keep in mind that this is the same guy that averaged a double-double each of the past two season for Indy — and is one of the few big men that will consistently give you better than one three-pointer per night. He figures to end up with a contending club, and should produce decent numbers down the stretch — though he won’t approach his 2008-09 level. Murph makes a fine speculative add if you need boards or threes, but keep the bait knife handy in case he doesn’t land in a favourable environment. And yes, the Troll will give his take via Twitter whenever Murphy packs his bags.

2011 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Top 10 Rookies

While the ’10 campaign undoubtedly set the bar very high, 2011 ushers in another strong group of first-year players that look poised to make an impact in both big-league ballparks and Fantasy lineups. Some of these players will be familiar names, as they made their big-league debuts last season, while others may be relatively unknown. Not all will start the season in the bigs; the economics of baseball dictate that small-market teams sometimes send their top prospects to the minors just long enough (typically late May or early June) to delay their arbitration-eligible date by one year and avoid “Super Two” status. The lesson here is this: Even if one of your targeted players is a late spring cut, keep one eye on his minor league numbers and another on the calendar. When Memorial Day rolls around, be prepared to pounce when your guy is called to The Show.
