Chase Headley simply isn’t slowing down. As great as his August was – good enough to make him the first Padre to be NL Player of the Month since Tony Gwynn in May 1997 – he’s smoking it even more this month. How about a .344 mark with six dingers, 21 RBI and a steal?

Giambi is not hitting nearly as well this year, but it’s his complete lack of extra-base pop – especially in light of last year’s showing – that is most shocking. He can still draw a walk, but it’s not like he’s going to steal a base or anything once he gets on. Giambi has also reduced his strikeout rate, but the better contact is not manifesting itself in a better BA.

Other than a middling May (in which he still hit a season-best six homers with 19 RBI), Butler has been money all year long. His lowest OPS by month was that May at 818. That’s not too shabby!

The really impressive part of Chapman’s progress this year is the improved control. Last year, the southpaw walked an unsightly 7.38 batters per 9; this year, that number is just 2.66. That is a shocking turnaround and the main reason Chapman has enjoyed a breakout year that has included career bests in wins, saves, strikeouts, WHIP and ERA.

Out since early July with a strained lat, Cashner returned to the rotation last week and was in fine form. He tossed five strong innings against Arizona, allowing four hits, no walks, and a couple of earned runs in a no-decision. The Padres are going with a six-man rotation down the stretch and Cashner’s got the Rockies at home in his next start. San Diego has been on quite the roll since the break and the successful return of Cashner will do nothing but aide in ensuring a strong finish for the Friars.

Meanwhile, the White Sox are falling apart, but — fortunately — not losing too much ground on a Detroit team that isn’t exactly taking advantage. Still, the loser of this division race is putting themselves in deep trouble in the Wild Card standings.
