Lots of star power has occupied the two-guard slot over the years, but the position is not currently in a golden age. After the top three, there’s a pretty significant drop and in short order, the position becomes fairly barren. If you don’t get one of the big guns here, don’t wait too long to grab someone or else you’re going to be in dire straits.

As they have done so many times in the postseason, the Tampa Bay Rays were beginning to look like a team of destiny. After walking into Texas Monday and dumping the Rangers 5-2 in the tiebreaker to clinch the second AL Wild Card spot, the Rays headed to Cleveland Wednesday and shut down the Tribe 4-0 to earn a place in the ALDS.

The trick was turned twice in the 1930s, once in the ’40s, three times in the 1950s and once each in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. It then happened three times in the span of 16 months between 2002 and 2003, including twice in three weeks in May 2002. Finally, another four-homer game showed up last season, giving us at least one occurrence in each decade since Lou Gehrig launched the category.

Lillard was a slam dunk for Rookie of the Year last season, playing every single game while averaging 19 points and 6.5 dimes and even pitching in with decent board numbers. Is this the season he becomes an All-Star?

The Cards won the game, 7-6, when Jon Jay — who had already smacked a three-run homer earlier — drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and Edward Mujica finished it off with a perfect bottom of the ninth. Allen Craig also went yard for the Cards.

Many experts have him No. 1, but as we discussed in the intro, we think Rask and Niemi get the edge based on their schedules. The King is one of the best goalies in the game and he proved it again last year, even though his GAA inched back over 2.00. What a stiff! Look for him to again log tons of action, probably around 65 games, a figure he topped five straight years before 2011-12.
