Music wise, the game falls into many of the same trappings of titles set in this sort of time and place. Expect lots of catchy synth. While nothing particularly stood out, the game does allow you to set up a playlist at the beginning of every work day, so you at least get to focus on the songs you want to hear.

Tokyo Dark stars Detective Ito as a young cop recently returned to active duty after a standoff went wrong a few months back. Her troubles start right away when her partner (and boyfriend) is taken hostage, seemingly by a woman Ito had killed in said standoff — and so right off the bat it lets players know this isn’t going to be a typical detective game.

Players control a ragtag group of thieves that are doing their best to steal some ancient artifacts called Zodiarcs, which were left behind by a mysterious ancient race called the Heralds. As with all stories dealing with relics like these, things quickly get out of hand and what started off as a simple thieving task now imperils the world, and our plucky band of heroes will have to set their sights a little higher than mere survival.

Yooka-Laylee starts with the titular duo having their prized book stolen by the villains in a greedy attempt to horde the world’s books, for whatever reason. Look, the plot isn’t important, all that players really need to know is the enemy is greedy and took your stuff, and naturally you will spend many hours collecting it back.

Outlast 2 seems to want to be bigger and better than the first game in every way. That’s a nice focus, but it ends up diluting the experience somewhat. The game opens on a helicopter ride, which, well… players likely know where that’s going.

Persona 5 starts out similarly to Persona 4, with a young student being forced to move and attend high school in a very different setting from where they grew up. This time our lead relocates from the countryside to Tokyo due to being branded a minor criminal. Soon enough they gain the ability to use Personas and the code name “Joker,” and then it’s off to balance dungeon diving and having a social life.

Despite being developed with platforms like the PS4 and PC in mind, Tales of Berseria was also still made for the PS3, so not everything’s looking very next-gen yet. On the plus side, the series returns to 60 FPS gameplay, which works very well with the extravagant battle system.
