I’ve got a busy weekend planned, as the wifey-type unit and I are headed down to the Dome… er, Rogers Centre to catch the weekend series against the Phillies. Casey Janssen goes for the Jays Friday and it’s my first chance to see him live, so I will try to file a report on him either later tonight or tomorrow some time. He looked superb a few starts ago against the Angels in a game I caught on the tube, but it looks like the rest of the league has been catching up to him lately. Let’s see what happens Friday. (Go Phils! This is the first chance I’ve had to see the Phillies, who are my second favourite team, in person since since the 1993 World Series.)

I also have to write Spikes Up, my baseball column for CREATiVESPORTS.com, and get going on my essay for BaseballNotebook.com. All the while, I’m doing the editing for CREATiVESPORTS.com’s MLB mid-season kit. So it’s a busy few days which may mean a reduction in posting. But not to worry… I’ll try to get some juicy tidbits up at some point. Mmm… juicy.

Wednesday’s win over the sagging Dodgers was the Twinkies’ lucky seventh straight. Minny was a dismal 27-34 and 11.5 games back in the AL Central after getting beat by the O’s on June 10. Since then, the club has gone an unconscious 15-1. And guess how many games they’ve shaved off of the Tigers’ lead with this run? more

The NBA draft occurred Wednesday night, a couple of hours after our deadline for this column, so coverage of that will have to wait until next time, but for now, let’s get into some free-agent chat. more

Seo’s value goes up too, as he gets to go back to starting. Bear in mind, however, that he moves away from one of the best pitching parks in the majors and has looked much better as a reliever than as a starter this year. more

Should the younger Weaver return — and frankly, given his recent performance (6-1, 2.10 at Salt Lake with 11 Ks Wednesday night after 14 in his previous outing) he deserves to — it will probably mean Jeff will either be dealt (unlikely given his bloated $8.325-million salary), sent to the bullpen or designated for assignment. more
