Video Game Review: Far Harbor DLC

Far Harbor DLC
Lasers? Get me Catherine Zeta-Jones!

If you’ve long beaten The Mechanist DLC and have grown tired of building up your army of robots (yeah, right), the answer might lie in Far Harbor. In this latest addition to the core game, you’re prompted to help a couple of parents find their missing daughter (sound kind of familiar?).

Naturally, you accept this quest and start to make your way to Far Harbor. Upon setting foot to shore, you’ll encounter a few surly individuals, but making friends here is generally rather easy.

Both the town itself and the surrounding land are engulfed in a thick fog (that also tends to bog down the frame rate a bit, even post-patch on PS4) and hidden inside are new breeds of terrors to dismantle with your bullets and VATs system.

In your adventure to discern the fate of the missing child, you’ll inevitably run across the Children of Atom once again and even be tempted to give their temple, The Nucleus, a visit. You’ll also happen upon a settlement called Acadia, which is a synth-controlled establishment meant to give synths a home in the wastes.

The main quest line can be burned through in about two hours or so, with the side quests bringing the total playtime of the DLC to around eight hours. Whereas The Mechanist DLC gave you a creative way to mess with the mainland, Far Harbor feels isolated, and not in the way we think that they intended. The plot twists don’t really add up to be anything too believable, either, especially if you’ve completed the main quest lines for each faction.

That being said, the new armour sets, weapons and items are all very satisfying to use, especially the damn Harpoon Gun. The enemies are also fresh and terrifying as hell, but the weapons and beasts feel like the only truly “new” stuff.

OVERALL (3.75/5)

As it stands right now, Far Harbor feels like it’ll end up being the weak link in the Fallout 4 DLC line, but even so, there’s still tons of fun to be had, interesting characters to meet and lore to discover.

A nefarious villain thought to be a myth has made himself, and his goals, apparent. The Mechanist will enslave the whole world with his robotic army, if everything goes according to plan that is.

Video Game Review: Fallout 4

November 17, 2015 | by Mike Chen | Comments Comments Off on Video Game Review: Fallout 4
The core Fallout experience is roughly the same, it just looks better and is more refined. You’ll explore the wasteland, embark on a personal quest while picking up dozens of side quests, run into things both humorous and heart-wrenching and shoot a lot of stuff.
