One positive note is that the frame rate has been cranked up to 60 frames per second, and it’s a level that is maintained from start to finish regardless of what’s happening on screen.

On the audio half a passable but utterly forgettable soundtrack is accompanied by another strong showing from the voice actors. And while the dialogue may not be Pixar caliber, the writing is clever enough to make the game enjoyable to children and adults alike. On the downside, there is too much repetition amid the in-game banter from the Skylanders themselves.

In short, it’s all very functional, but lively enough to prevent it from feeling too instructional. I do have a gripe about the way the notes scroll, but I’ll leave that for the gameplay section.

It’s an immersive, interesting world with a story that quickly grips you and sucks you in. The episode’s ending is a doozy, and you’ll be either sitting slackjawed at the screen or screaming at it — either way, Episode 2 can’t come quickly enough.

For the past few hockey seasons — yes, even the lockout-shortened one that ran for 48 games — I’ve subscribed to NHL Center Ice through DirecTV. This season, however, that all changes as I go strictly streaming with NHL GamecenterLive. I’ve had GCL before but it’s always been in conjunction with Center Ice, so it’s been more of a supplement if I needed to watch an archived game or highlights, or I was away from our big TV. While those sections could be classified as dull, the action segments just don’t work very well. In theory it should function smoothly as all you’re asked to do is move the right stick in a direction corresponding to the action when the screen slows. For example, if you’re delivering a kick at an enemy on the left side of the screen you move the analog stick left to connect. Unfortunately, a large number of actions take place in an ambiguous position, causing you to essentially guess which directional input is needed.
