Well, it took some time because he had to deal with some not-so-minor groin issues this year, but he did wind up having somewhat of a breakthrough. Well, at least he finally got a more extended opportunity to strut his stuff.

Hernandez didn’t even look that sharp in his two Triple-A tune-up starts before getting slaughtered in the bigs. And as bad as his results were, an abnormally low .250 BABIP suggests they could have even worse.

The dude was 37 before the season started and given that he was moving from a weak division to one of the toughest in the game (not to mention a nice hitter’s park for half his starts), we thought that as long as he didn’t backslide too much, it would be a victory.

May proved to be a solid month for Porcello, but he really took off in June, going 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA. Unfortunately, the rest of the season was a struggle. July saw his K rate plummet and his ERA soar. In August, he worked more innings with better results, but September was ugly. Thankfully, he finished on a strong note in his sole October start.

So what happens? Desmond experiences a major breakthrough and winds up as the only regular shortstop in the majors to slug at least .500. He still can’t draw a walk, but that didn’t stop him from finally hitting for average (over .290). Oh, and as expected, Desmond topped 20 steals.
