MLB Today: Vernon Wells Keeps Struggling

After a nice start, the Angels’ offense as a whole has gone into the tank big-time recently and that helps explain Wells’ paltry run total. Of course, a .224 OBP is a pretty darned good reason why he’s scoring less than a UNIX programmer with four-inch thick glasses. Of greater concern has been Wells’ complete lack of productivity. The dude is batting fifth (and sometimes cleanup) in Los Angeles’ lineup yet has only driven in five freaking runs all season. He’s hitting .146 with runners on base and .174 with RISP. Yikes.

MLB Today: Buy Low on A.J. Pierzynski

The White Sox got swept in Detroit this weekend, but they weren’t just beaten – they were humiliated 21-3 over the three games, getting shut out the last two games and running their current skid to 10 losses in 11 games. MLB Today: A Toast to Miguel Cabrera

One thing that is risk-free is Cabrera’s ability to carry your team. On Tuesday, he racked up his third straight multi-hit game, including a walk-off bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to give the Tigers a much-needed win. Yes, Cabrera’s latest DUI charge has yet to be resolved, but he’s picking up right where he left off last year when he was the runner up in the AL MVP race.

MLB Today: Conor Jackson Showing Signs of Life

At any rate, with the Jays starting southpaws in the opening and closing games of this series, Jackson got a pair of starts, and he responded with three hits, a walk and two RBI. If he continues to produce (and play defense – he made a sparkling catch to end a threat in the sixth), his playing time should increase, so he’s a name for AL-only league owners to put on their radar. Oakland is clearly desperate for an offensive spark, so keep an eye on this situation.
