Video Game Review: Halo: The Master Chief Collection

While every system has its signature characters, none are more inseparable than Microsoft and the Master Chief — hell, it named the Windows phone’s personal assistant Cortana. Thus, the arrival of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, highlighted by Halo 2 Anniversary, on the Xbox One is a landmark moment that brings all four of the Chief’s adventures onto one console and sets the table for next year’s Halo 5: Guardians. Cue the Gregorian chants, it’s Halo time.

Video Game Review: NBA Live ’15

If you’ve played a sports title of any variety in the past several years you should have a pretty good idea of what awaits you in NBA Live ’15. Dynasty puts you in the GM’s seat, providing decision making power over all aspects of personnel (trades, free agency and the draft) as well as some coaching input in the form of minutes distribution. Trade logic is decent, though it doesn’t feel like it’s weighing salary enough as we were routinely able to dump bad contracts.

Video Game Review: Sunset Overdrive

As previously alluded to, the story of Sunset Overdrive is played almost entirely for laughs. Nothing is taken seriously, and the game delights in pointing out how it’s following industry clichés. That approach keeps things feeling light as the challenge elevates — even deaths are treated as mere momentary setbacks accompanied by silly respawn animations. If you string too many story missions together, however, it loses its impact as the humour gets repetitious.

Video Game Review: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

Over the years a number of games have stood out to us as deserving considerably more attention than they received. Titles like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Singularity and Spec Ops: The Line, just to name a few. Well, at or near the top of that list is Sleeping Dogs, so when  Square-Enix decided to upgrade the graphics, add all the downloadable content and bring it to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with the moniker of the Definitive Edition, you’d best believe we wanted to review this title.

Video Game Review: Alien: Isolation

When creating an Alien title, it’s important that the game feel like an organic extension of the world we’ve seen on film. On that front, Isolation is a smashing success. The Sevastopol space station features the same technology seen in the original film, creating that modern yet aged vibe. It really feels like you could be walking the hallways of the Nostromo. The lighting effects are excellent and play a major role in the game’s stealth elements. Couple that with being stalked by the alien and things get legitimately creepy numerous times throughout the game.

Product Review: A38 Active Noise Cancelling Wireless Headset

Thanks to the size of the ear cups, the A38s also offer a nice variety of depth, allowing sounds to resonate at distance or come across as though they’re right next to you. It’s great when watching films or playing certain games, helping to deliver the intended experience. Music sounds very good as well and doesn’t fall victim to the tendency to go over the top with the bass. It’s all part of a consistently clean, crisp sound that feels appropriate for the premium price.

Video Game Review: Skylanders Trap Team

Structurally, Trap Team follows established patterns as you’ll smash objects, fight enemies and progress through fairly linear levels with branching paths that require additional Skylanders to reach. What is new is the ability to capture a series of villains after defeating them. Once in your possession you’re able to bring them on future missions and switch freely between your Skylander and captive villain.
