Video Game Review: Modern Combat: Domination

There isn’t much to get excited about here. You’ve seen the game’s five locations in one form or another in plenty of other shooters with pathways laid out to allow multiple access points to rooms and dissuade camping. The level of detail is fairly sparse throughout, but if that’s the price to be paid for a usually smooth frame rate then so be it. What is disappointing is the lack of impact from explosives or the last gen smoke effects when you pop a grenade for cover.

Video Game Review: Zeit²

For such a straightforward shooter, the controls actually have a mild learning curve. Your primary weapon is fired with the “A” button while the right and left triggers are used to fast-forward and rewind time, respectively. You’ll also build up special weapon blasts with “B” firing a beam and “X” unleashing a chain shot. It takes a little while to get the hang of everything, but once you do it’s a strong setup (which is good because they cannot be remapped).

Video Game Review: Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

The game’s techno soundtrack matches the high intensity on-screen action step for step, building and accelerating in all the right places. I’m not a fan of that style, but it’s so well integrated, I honestly can’t even think of what other musical accompaniment could take its place. All the classic sound effects and signature ditties are present as well.

Video Game Review: X-Men Arcade

Since Konami no longer holds the X-Men license (cut to Activision laughing maniacally), its deal with Marvel to revive an 18-year-old title left it unable to make any changes to the game, including the outdated graphics. At least the characters themselves are colourful and easily recognizable, though it gets tough to identify yourself when you’ve got a full complement of gamers along with multiple enemies on the screen at the same time.

Video Game Review: Pinball F/X 2 & Marvel Tables DLC

All eight tables I got to check out (known as the Core and Classic Collections) while reviewing this game were crisp and well designed, though you can easily tell which four are brand new and which have been brought forward from the original. Zen Studios has done a nice job of creating something that is similar to what you’d see in an authentic table while still taking advantage of working in the digital medium by incorporating things like mini games to make each table feel more unique.
