The Wire Troll: Gifts Wrapped For 2014

Ladies and gentlemen, 2013 is just about over and it is time to take a look ahead to 2014. That is a pretty scary thought… or is it? This week, we examine the retreads of the waiver wire. These may often be players that are fairly recognizable but have fallen out of Fantasy favour for whatever reason.

With the injury count rising to Olympic levels (2010), it really is time to start digging deeper and deeper. Hey, what would you like us to do? This is the reality nearly every Fantasy owner faces. Countless people we talk to lament about how they keep having to drop talent because there are not enough IR or IR+ slots. It is hard to fathom, yet this problem exists.

With that said, we trudge onward with The Wire Troll in an effort to help your beleaguered Fantasy squads. Are you ready? Let’s go.

Adam Henrique, C, New Jersey Devils: This is a strange pick. It may be more because he was nearly a rookie of the year. However, Henrique’s 15 per cent ownership rate is noticeable but his play is starting to return to 2012 levels. With four points in his last six games, Henrique is starting to heat up. Our only concern is he averages just 1.5 shots per game, however his scoring chances have ticked slightly upward, and we know he can bury his chances. Just watch Henrique’s line combinations, but we would take a gamble. He is not as bad of a player as the results have indicated.

Andrew Cogliano, C/LW, Anaheim Ducks: Cogliano was a known quantity that was durable and productive last season despite not getting top six ice time. This season, after a bit of an uneven start, he has managed nine points in his last eight games. When a player is only owned in 6-to-12 per cent of leagues like he is, that means there is a good chance he is out there. You may risk a little time on ice and blocks, but a bit more than a point every other game is solid in deeper leagues.

Tyler Myers, D, Buffalo Sabres: Myers was a very good player for Buffalo in his rookie year, and then it all fell apart. Honestly, he is still a bit of a train wreck now, but the minutes keep coming and he is shooting a bit more lately. If you are in leagues with PIMs, Myers has a respectable 44 along with 50+ shots and 50+ blocks. At least he fills some categories. That helps in deeper leagues, and his ownership rate is in single digits. We don’t like the lack of points, but, hey, three points in Myers’ last five games at least shows some progress. Hopefully it does, anyway.

Nathan Horton, RW, Columbus Blue Jackets: Though he is a few weeks away, we would consider stashing Horton now as his ownership rates are up to 25-to-35 per cent. That will not regress much, if at all. Just keep it under advisement as Fantasy hockey owners get desperate this time of year and they may be bound to just stash a guy for the heck of it.

Nick Foligno, LW, Columbus Blue Jackets: Foligno is another guy that can often produce points at a decent clip enough to fill a few categories which means at a 25-to-30 per cent ownership rate, he is a decent pickup. The Fantasy waiver wire hound looks for players like this who can produce for spurts until injured players return. This can be Foligno’s Fantasy upside and that is not too bad when trying to keep a good team heading in the right direction.

Denis might not be a show-stealer, but he’ll be consistent, and maybe even great. And the good thing is that a lot of people forget about him, so you can use a later pick on him in your Fantasy draft.
