Video Game Review: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

Over the years a number of games have stood out to us as deserving considerably more attention than they received. Titles like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Singularity and Spec Ops: The Line, just to name a few. Well, at or near the top of that list is Sleeping Dogs, so when  Square-Enix decided to upgrade the graphics, add all the downloadable content and bring it to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with the moniker of the Definitive Edition, you’d best believe we wanted to review this title.

Video Game Review: Alien: Isolation

When creating an Alien title, it’s important that the game feel like an organic extension of the world we’ve seen on film. On that front, Isolation is a smashing success. The Sevastopol space station features the same technology seen in the original film, creating that modern yet aged vibe. It really feels like you could be walking the hallways of the Nostromo. The lighting effects are excellent and play a major role in the game’s stealth elements. Couple that with being stalked by the alien and things get legitimately creepy numerous times throughout the game.

Video Game Review: Styx: Master of Shadows

On paper, it’s hard to believe that there hasn’t been a game like Styx before. It’s essentially a combination of PS2-era Metal Gear Solid with a dash of Assassin’s Creed, all set in a D&D-style world. As a character, Styx is likable enough, the environments are big enough to allow some flexibility in how you get from A to B, RPG-style character progression gives you choice in how you grow, and Styx’s magic abilities add a unique flavour to the genre.

Video Game Review: Skylanders Trap Team

Structurally, Trap Team follows established patterns as you’ll smash objects, fight enemies and progress through fairly linear levels with branching paths that require additional Skylanders to reach. What is new is the ability to capture a series of villains after defeating them. Once in your possession you’re able to bring them on future missions and switch freely between your Skylander and captive villain.

Video Game Review: Defense Grid 2

Although the game’s focus is hammering the player into a hardened min-max pro, you don’t have to be godly at micromanagement to have a fun and successful time with Defense Grid 2. You’re still able to manipulate the speed of time, so if you’ve got what you think is a solid line of defense, crank up the speed and test out your theory! This can be a dangerous move, though, since, as mentioned above, the levels can change in an instant.

Video Game Review: FIFA ’15

Offline, FIFA ’15 is built around EA’s Ultimate Team and a pair of career offerings (one as a player, one as a manager). When creating a player you’ll select your league and team, and then you’re a safe bet to get transferred to a lesser league to hone your craft. It’s the typical rags to riches developmental journey as you’ll be presented with a set of objectives to meet with skills growing as you play.
