In an effort to stay spoiler free, we’ll say this about Smoke & Mirrors — the shocking end of Faith is followed up by another shock within the first 15 minutes or so. The following 60-to-90 minutes colour in a lot of details, ask some questions, and answer a little more (though not too much).

The environment of New Orleans and the surrounding bayou, along with a trip to Mexico, look like the series should, which is good and bad. The backgrounds and buildings have more screentear and pixelation than games developed on consoles, but they still capture the aura of their respective areas well.

Online multiplayer with up to eight players is drop-in/drop-out with friend lists (but no dedicated server yet — that is supposedly coming down the line, as well as PS4/PS Vita support), and local co-op allows up to four players, so players can make plans and craft together.

Cardboard cutout crowds have been part of the EA Sports package since the PS2/Xbox days. While textures brought more detail in recent years, stadiums still had a lifelessness to them. One of the Ignite engine’s biggest improvements comes with stadium details. Finally, crowd members are fully realized 3D models capable of moving individually. Sidelines are also now filled with cameramen, media members, and other extras. Wide shots are more impressive than ever before, and they complement the extremely detailed stadiums in ways you’ve never seen.

In short, it’s all very functional, but lively enough to prevent it from feeling too instructional. I do have a gripe about the way the notes scroll, but I’ll leave that for the gameplay section.
