The Wire Troll: Dan Girardi Rides Rising Rangers

With a 9-1 record in their past 10 games, the Rangers are currently the hottest team in the league, leading the Metropolitan Division with five points to spare at 32. Girardi, more of a stay-at-home defenseman, is making a serious case for himself to be on your Fantasy roster. Through 20 games played, he has two goals, eight points, a plus-12 rating, six penalty minutes, 17 shots on goal, 46 hits and 44 blocked shots. We hope you have better players on your team’s top defensive pairing, but Girardi will certainly do as a third or fourth defenseman.

The Wire Troll: Jared Spurgeon Surging in St. Paul

A 16-goal, 33-point scorer last season, Hansen is off to a considerably good start this season with five goals, 11 points, a plus-10 rating, four penalty minutes, 33 shots on goal, eight hits and seven blocked shots in 18 games this season. Don’t expect him to consistently produce, but he could be a savvy pick in leagues with many teams and a very shallow free agent pool.

The Wire Troll: Kris Versteeg Leading Rising Hurricanes

The Flames are one of a few teams previously expected to contend that are now reeling near the bottom of the standings. Still, there have been some pleasant surprises, including the production of Frolik, who has three goals, 11 points, a minus-1 rating, two penalty minutes, 43 shots on goal, 13 hits and 16 blocked shots through 15 games. He should be a little more productive and consistent than Versteeg, so he’s worth giving a PTO on your team, so to speak.

The Wire Troll: Dale Weise Breaks Out For Habs

We seem to include Nielsen in our listings every October or November and then, as soon as we hit “publish,” he instantly stops producing. *Facepalm* We’re willing to take that risk, because he’s been just too good to ignore. Through 11 games played, Nielsen has five goals, nine points, a power play goal, 31 shots on goal, six hits and 13 blocked shots. Knowing our luck, that’s now all he’ll get for the season.

Book Review: Performing Under Pressure

Stress is triggered by the needs and demands of everyday life. It’s the reminder to pay the bills, buy the groceries and get the kids to soccer practice on time. Pressure is what we experience in life’s do-or-die moments — landing a plane without landing gear, making a risky business decision that could affect hundreds or thousands of employees, needing an “A” on a final exam to pass a class or needing a goal with your team trailing 3-2 with just 15 seconds to play in Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final. Stress is an inconvenience. Pressure is a need to survive. Both serve a valuable motivating purpose.
