The big news in the NFL last week was that the New England Patriots traded the long-rumoured to be on the block Jimmy Garoppolo, sending the backup quarterback to a place where he might have an immediate impact — San Francisco.
The Pats get the 49ers’ second round pick next year, but more urgently, the ‘Niners finally get a QB that they might be able to build around. While Garoppolo sat this week (see the video below for a look at him working out), it will be fascinating to watch going forward what kind of effect he’ll have on the betting odds for NFL games involving San Francisco. We may soon finally get to see Garopplo’s quick release in action on an ongoing basis.
Now, let’s review some of the more interesting Fantasy developments around the NFL in Week Nine.
So much for the Buffalo Bills looking like a playoff contender, huh? AFC East tilts are notoriously tough to predict, so we can’t read too much into this, but the Jets really controlled this game. Jets running back Matt Forte finally had double-digit carries, and he looked great with the extra workload, rushing for a season-high 77 yards and scoring his first two touchdowns of the season. All he had to do was moan a bit about the lack of a running game by the Jets, and viola — he got fed the pigskin.
After simply molesting the Giants Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams now have the NFL’s best road record at 4-0, en route to taking over sole possession of the NFC West lead. Jared Goff suddenly looks like a very worthy Fantasy quarterback, one you should definitely scoop off the wire if he’s available. How about his career game Sunday with four touchdown passes and 311 yards passing? A couple of long TD passes helped really jack up his YPA. Since getting picked twice by Seattle in Week Five, Goff has looked better and better each game. The 2016 first overall pick has now topped 2,000 yards passing — halfway through his second season. He looked lost last year, but now, his arrival as a legitimate quarterback has coincided with the Rams’ coming of age. No wonder so many NFL teams are beating the bushes for a franchise QB. This is Exhibit A on the rewards of finding one.
Another young quarterback that has been gaining Fantasy traction is Buffalo’s Tyrod Taylor. And while his performance Thursday looked strong on some levels (a season-best 285 yards; two touchdown passes and no picks; and a strong rushing performance including a touchdown), he was also sacked seven times. His YPA has dropped for two straight seasons, but he’s looked much better passing out of the pocket this year, so there’s definitely been some signs of progress.
New York Giants QB Eli Manning failed to reach even 240 yards passing for sixth time in eight games this season, but he did manage to top the 50,000 mark for his career, making him just the seventh man to do so in NFL history. With just 1,442 yards passing to go, he’ll likely pass John Elway and move into sixth place on the all-time list before the end of the season. Without the receiving corps needed to be a stud, Manning is at best a high-end backup quarterback for Fantasy purposes now. Yes, he was certainly better Sunday than he was against the Seahawks in Week Eight, but it’s going to take a miracle in the second half for him to put up a fourth straight 4,000-yard passing season.
