Fantasy Notes: Another Mariner Catching Prospect

Having transferred from Nebraskra this year, Moore led the Mavericks in hitting (.350), homers (10) and RBI (50). He was assigned to Everett and made a quick adjustment to wooden bats, going 12-for-24 through his first six games. Within two weeks, still batting a robust .317, Moore got a promotion to Wisconsin. He’s found the going a bit tougher there, but is starting to come around. The 22-year-old, 6’3″, 215-pounder can also apparently play first and third should he wind up getting blocked in the organization, but for now his focus is on catching.

Fantasy Notes: Erik Bedard Comes of Age

Well, Cabrera was rancid and had to be demoted 10 days ago. Bedard also struggled at the outset, and his ERA was pretty unsightly (almost 6.00) after getting shelled in a June 1 start. Since then, however, the young Canadian southpaw has been among the top pitchers in all of baseball. In nine starts covering 60 IP, Bedard has given up just 40 hits and 16 walks while striking out 65 and recording a 1.95 ERA. He’s gone 7-1 over that stretch (including winning his past seven starts) and suddenly has a dozen wins, doubling his previous career best, and ranking fourth in the American League. Overall, Bedard has now lowered his ERA to 3.94 and looks to be one of the best bets for the second half, but his recent streak has rendered him unavailable in basically any kind of league.

Fantasy Notes: Who Takes Over in Philly?

The only problem there is Dellucci couldn’t get a hit against a southpaw with a tree trunk, so he’s better suited as a platoon player. Luckily, Victorino hits lefties slightly better than righties. So we suppose the best bet is a platoon, a situation that would increase Dellucci’s value to some extent, but really render both players as Fantasy non factors. We still really like the switch-hitting Victorino’s chances to be a lead-off hitter down the road.

Fantasy Notes: Is Bartlett Building a Future?

But from a Fantasy standpoint, there are a couple of areas we’d like to see improvement in. Firstly, although Bartlett’s OBP is healthy, he’s actually walking less often than he did last year. But of greater concern is that even though he’s been given the go ahead to run, he’s stolen just one base, getting caught twice. Combine that with Bartlett’s complete lack of power, and you have the makings of an empty .300 hitter.

Fantasy Notes: Prior Down Again

Afflicted with a strained oblique, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 5, making him eligible to be activated later this week. Prior is starting to believe what countless Cubs fans already do: “The goat is starting to look real.” At any rate, Prior was scheduled to throw a bullpen session today to determine if he’ll go Thursday or wait until the weekend to make his next start… assuming the goat allows it.

Fantasy Notes: Sanchez Tops the Rocket

Sanchez has now bookended shutout efforts against the Yankees (a very big deal) and the Astros (not that big a deal) around a couple of bitch-slappings at the hands of the Red Sox and the Nats. It’s a small sample size, but he isn’t striking out enough batters and not recording enough ground balls to sustain this kind of success. Having said that, he was averaging well over a strikeout per inning at Double-A before Florida yanked this young fish out of the Southern League waters.

Fantasy Notes: Akron Aeros Pitching Report

Despite being just a 16th round pick out of high school in 2003, Laffey has moved through the Cleveland system fairly quickly. He began the season at High-A Kinston, going 4-1 through 10 games (four starts), with one save. Laffey did not allow a single home run and walked just six through 41 1/3 IP, a nice combination. Promoted to Double-A Akron, Laffey has been used exclusively as a starter with the Aeros, going 3-2, 4.04, through nine starts and 55 2/3 IP, with 14 walks against 30 strikeouts. His adjustment to Double-A has been fairly smooth until a start last weekend when Laffey was shellacked for eight runs (seven earned) and a dozen hits in just 5 1/3 IP.
