Ferguson was a two-way player who spent four years in majors, all with Philadelphia. He made 170 career starts and completed 165 of them, underscoring how different the game was back then. As a second baseman/outfielder, the switch-hitter recorded a 735 OPS while scoring 191 runs in 257 games. Ferguson led the NL in WAR in 1886, but his promising career was cut short when he died of typhoid fever before the 1888 season.

We’ll always have Game Six of the 2011 World Series, right? Freese has never really lived up to the promise he showed early in his career with the Cards, but this season marks the closest he’s come. He’s batting .412 over the past week, enjoying what could be his finest month of the season (938 OPS). Overall, Freese is hitting much better this season, flashing his finest extra-base sock since 2012 in what’s shaping up as a pretty productive campaign. He would not look out of place in the corner infielder slot of a deep mixed league.

In his last start, Locke was handed a four-lead in the first inning against a weak Atlanta squad. The final score? Braves 8, Pirates 4. He was molested by what’s little more than a Triple-A club for nine hits, two walks and five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, thereby sealing his doom.

The Wire Troll: Scott Schebler Gets His Shot

Yes, we’ve been ringing Josh’s Bell for some time now and we still can’t understand why he’s being denied a longer look in the bigs. Sure, since his brief recall, he’s struggled somewhat at Triple-A, but with multi-hit efforts in two of the last three games, he’s showing signs of moving past that. We still believe Bell makes for a perfect stash given the ability to rack up counting cats he’s shown at Triple-A. His time will come… soon, hopefully.
