Fantasy Notes: Dealing Duke

September 13, 2006 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
  • Zach Duke struck out a season-high seven batters on Monday. He’s got a 2.05 ERA in three September starts. You want him.
  • Doug Davis, despite his fantastic four-hitter last week, is too inconsistent to touch right now. Steer clear.
  • Jose Vidro is playing sporadically now as the club tries to get a longer look at Bernie Castro, but Vidro has driven in five runs in the past two games.
  • Diamondback set-up man Luis Vizcaino has been almost unhittable in the second half, limiting opponents to a .169 batting average.
  • Have you noticed that Nick Johnson is finally having the season we all thought was in him? He has career highs virtually across the board with 95 runs, 140 hits, 45 doubles, over 20 homers, 75 RBI, an NL-leading 104 walks, 10 steals (where did that come from?), a BA close to .300, a .434 OBP (again, best in the NL) and a 966 OPS.
  • Chad Cordero has really turned his season around with a 1.80, 14-save second half.
  • Damion Easley, despite being in his waning years (he did, after all, spend five seasons with the Halos when they were still called the California Angels), still has pop. With nine homers is just over 175 at-bats, he’s hitting them out at a higher rate than he ever has before — by a fairly big margin.
  • With the addition of veteran Johnny Estrada and the emergence of prospect Miguel Montero, Chris Snyder has become somewhat of an afterthough at catcher in Arizona. But he’s just 25, and has hit .295 with five homers, 20 walks and an 814 OPS in his 51 games and 156 at-bats this season. He could still be a gifted offensive catcher if given a chance somewhere.
  • Arizona outfielder Chris Young has scuffled after getting off to a quick start last month, but he’s a player to track. I don’t know how Arizona is going to work in all its young talent, but it will be fun to watch.
