Video Game Review: Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark

Even without a great plot, Rise of the Dark Spark could’ve still succeeded as an action game, but as with the characters it never seems to branch out from previous titles. As longtime fans, we still took a certain satisfaction in gunning down giant robots, but the game recycles the wave-based attack far too liberally, making large sections feel like a single-player Escalation mode. With all that déjà vu it really makes you wonder how much was ripped straight from High Moon’s last installment.

Review: Amazon Fire TV

Although most of our focus over the years has been on software, we do occasionally dip into the hardware market. That’s what we’re doing here as we take a look at Amazon’s new Fire TV, a hybrid streaming device and gaming console. Let’s see what this product, which retailed for US$99, has to offer and how it stacks up against comparable devices like Roku and Apple TV.

Video Game Review: Borderlands 2 (Vita)

Since the Vita lacks both bumpers and clickable analog sticks, their respective functions needed to be reconfigured. To Iron Galaxy’s credit that transition has been handled deftly. Melee and sprint, previously mapped to L3/R3, is now done by using the rear touch pad — press down on the left side and you’ll sprint, press right and you’ll (usually) melee. Grenades and class-specific abilities are deployed by tapping in the area of their icons on the touch screen.

Video Game Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Voice acting is pretty good during cut scenes and story-driven exchanges. It becomes incredibly repetitious during exploration, however, as both Spider-Man and the disposal villains will repeat lines far too frequently. We lost count of how many times we heard Spidey derisively say “I almost died… of boredom,” after throttling some lesser criminals. The music and sound effects are solid.
