Podcast: A Brief Moment of Insanity

June 15, 2010 | By Tim McLeod | comment on this post
Jonathan Sanchez is looking strong for the San Francisco Giants.
Could Jonathan Sanchez really outperform Francisco Liriano this season? Tim think so…

Sunday evening, I got the opportunity to sub for Tony Cincotta and joined the great Lenny Melnick and Rich Wilson for a lively hour of discussion on the FantasyPros911 show on Blogtalkradio.

We got the ball rolling by returning to a bet that Rich and I had made back in the spring. In a brief moment of insanity — yes, I have had a few over the years — I challenged him to a wager that Jonathan Sanchez would outperform Francisco Liriano in 2010 and it was time to weigh in on the early results and look down the road to the balance of the 2010 season.

How could we not spend time talking baseball without including a discussion on some of the young phenoms that have been recalled in the past week? In an interesting sideline we discussed the ramifications of trading Stephen Strasburg and what, in light of his great start, can and should we expect in terms of trade return. Is it time to look at maximizing that value in redraft leagues?

Heading into this season, the consensus was that Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun and Chase Utley were the first five picks to come of the board on draft day. We’ve now had two full months and change to review the results…who now makes up that top group of players?

We did a quick review of two-start pitchers for the coming week and there are certainly some gems that should be reviewed very closely. For instance, should Kyle Kendrick be an option in even the deepest of NL-only leagues?

It’s so easy to pat yourself on the back and acknowledge those hidden gems that have come to fruition but it was time to fess up and also look at some of those not so stellar recommendations. How many of the players in our discussion made it onto your Fantasy squad in 2010?

A fun time was had by all and you can listen to the entire show by clicking the play button below.
