If Lowell Leaves, Will Sox Sign A-Rod?

November 6, 2007 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
Mike Lowell could be leaving the World Champions.
If Mike Lowell, left, leaves Boston, might he be replaced by A-Rod?

In his column today, FoxSports’s Ken Rosenthal offered up some interesting scenarios, including:

  • If Mike Lowell, expected to get a four- or even five-year offer from the Yanks, Dodgers or Phillies, leaves the Sox, Boston may open the coffers and try to outbid the Angels, Dodgers and Giants for the services of Alex Rodriguez. Rosenthal thinks $150 million over five years might land A-Rod.
  • Assuming Boston does manage to bring in Rodriguez, that could mean the end of Manny Ramirez in a Boston uni. He’s entering the final season of his contract and Boston has $20 million options on him for 2009 and 2010.
  • Boston is also looking at a possible trade for young Dodger third base prospect Andy LaRoche, ready to step up and be a big-time player.
  • Jorge Posada may have no choice but to take the money and run, assuming the Mets so vastly outbid the Yanks for his services. It’s looking like the Pinstripers may be a very different club next season.
  • He’s still two years from free agency, but Miguel Cabrera could be had in the right deal. It’s doubtful the Yanks have the prospects to make that happen, but they will likely try.
  • In the year of the free agent CFer, Torii Hunter and Andruw Jones are likely each too big for the Nats to reel in, but Mike Cameron is a viable candidate. The connections are plentiful, Rosenthal says. For instance, Washington GM Jim Bowden once dealt Paul Konerko to land Cameron; manager Manny Acta was the bench coach for the Mets in 2005 when Cameron played there; and assistant GM Bob Boone’s two sons ” Aaron and Bret Boone ” each were teammates with Cameron. Washington will have competition from the Cubs for Cameron.
