The NHL has gone streaking! No, not that kind of streaking, you sickos!
The Philadelphia Flyers strung together a 10-game win streak that was only just stopped in a 3-1 loss to the Stars in Dallas on Saturday afternoon. In the Central Division, the Minnesota Wild is currently in the middle of a seven-game win streak, its longest since March 2013. In fact, Philly, Minny and the Columbus Blue Jackets are the NHL’s three hottest teams at the moment. Who would have thought it? On to this week’s Fantasy hockey waiver wire picks.
Mike Fisher, C, Nashville Predators (ESPN: 25.6 per cent; CBS: 17 per cent): “Mr. Underwood” will never be Nashville’s key offendive juggernaut (or yours), but he does provide an excellent source of secondary scoring. Fisher had four goals (including his 100th goal as a Predator — see video below), a plus-4 rating, a power play goal, a game-winning goal and six shots on net in three games last week.
Justin Williams, RW, Washington Capitals (ESPN: 31 per cent; CBS: 37 per cent): “Mr. Game Seven” hasn’t had a great season, but he’s on a bit of a hot streak at the moment. Williams had three goals, four points, two power play points and seven shots on goal in four games with the Caps last week.
Anthony DeAngelo, D, Arizona Coyotes (ESPN: 12.5 per cent; CBS: 32 per cent): The former Tampa Bay top pick is doing just fine with his fellow rookies in Arizona. The Coyotes may be hanging out in the league’s cellar, but the youngsters are receiving quality minutes of top development. DeAngelo is one of those benefiting from it, and so are his Fantasy owners. He had a goal, two points, a minus-2 rating, two power play points and 10 shots on goal in four games last week. The former Sarnia Sting star has three goals, nine points and a minus-1 rating in 16 games while averaging 19:18 of ice-time. As you can see, he’s far from sheltered.
Antti Niemi, G, Dallas Stars (ESPN: 36.7 per cent; CBS: 41 per cent): Niemi has just a .913 save percentage and a 2.85 goals against average this season, but recent play indicates the 2010 Stanley Cup champ may have a hot streak coming. The Finn had two wins, a 1.35 goals against and a .959 save percentage in three starts for the Stars last week. Proceed with caution.
Jason Zucker, LW, Minnesota Wild (ESPN: 12.3 per cent; CBS: 24 per cent): Zucker had been rolling, with 10 points in 10 games before getting shut out over the last two games. However, on Saturday, he was +1 with four shots and a minor penalty, so he continues to produce. Zucker seems to have really found his place in Minnesota’s top six with Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund, but just imagine how productive Zucker would be if the Wild would see fit to reward him with some PP time.
Rookie of the Week
Toronto’s Mitch Marner takes this week’s honours with a goal, four points, a plus-1 rating, a power play point and nine shots on goal in four games last week. He sits in a two-way tie with teammate and 2016 first overall pick Auston Matthews for second in rookie scoring with 23 points in 30 games. Matthews’ 14 goals breaks the tie, while fellow Maple Leafs rookie William Nylander occupies fourth with 20 points in 29 games. Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine occupied first with 26 points in 33 games.
