Gustav Nyquist is getting a chance on the top line for the Detroit Red Wings.
Gustav Nyquist has a chance to be a serious star for the Wings. (

So you got past Thanksgiving and then Black Friday. Now, December is here at last! This is the time of year when Fantasy owners start looking for retreads, even on the waiver wire. It is a scary thought to think of the sea of red that has become most Fantasy teams. Honestly, that problem has only gotten worse.

So what can you do? If you are absolutely desperate and are short on alternatives, then we might have a few alternatives for your Fantasy hockey team. Let’s get started on this week’s edition of The Wire Troll.

Gustav Nyquist, RW, Detroit Red Wings: Granted, this is a small sample size, but with Pavel Datsyuk (concussion) out, Nyquist has been given the keys to the Detroit castle (err the… top line). With that, he has taken advantage of the opportunity with a point a game and four goals in those five games, wasting no time in making an impact right from his first shift of the season (season video below). When Datsyuk returns, Detroit will have a bit of a dilemma on its hands. In the meantime, take a chance on a guy that surely will be owned by quite a few people next week.

Andrew Shaw, C, Chicago Blackhawks: This is another interesting pick but, hey, we take risks here at The Wire Troll. Chicago fans call him “Shawzer” among a variety of nicknames, but we like him for his sneaky Fantasy impact. Will he be able to keep it up and play 15-to-16 minutes per game? It will be fun to see what the minutes wind up looking like. If the scoring chances and points are decent enough, then Shaw may just be your guy. The 15-to-20 per cent ownership rate is enticing at the very least.

Mark Giordano, D, Calgary Flames: This is a stash and dash. Why? Giordano may not play this week, but he should return soon enough. People are going to realize how good he was in the first few weeks of the season and want to snatch him up early. That means you must get on this quicker than the rest. While Giordano won’t be a point a game guy when he comes back, he is going to play a ton of minutes and still rack up some categories since Dennis Wideman is out until January. Therefore, do what you need to do if Giordano is available.

Eric Gelinas, D, New Jersey Devils: Does anyone hear us? Gelinas has 10 points in 17 games for the Devils and has probably gained some notoriety among Fantasy owners because times are tough on the waiver wire. When you have a hard shot, you have to get it to the net. Gelinas excels at getting the puck towards the goal and that shot gets results. His play on the other side of the ice has also been welcome. Gelinas is also in the 15-to-20 per cent owned bracket, but that will not last long.

Cam Talbot, G, New York Rangers: We have a feeling this is going to generate some controversy, but Talbot is outplaying Henrik Lundqvist. Right now, that is just a fact. Lundqvist played better in November, but Talbot has stolen the show in his limited time. Does Talbot warrant a few more starts? Absolutely. Will he get them? Obviously that is not my call but the way he plays is impressive and something that was seen only in flashes in Hartford. Either way, Talbot is a player who should at least be on your radar if he is available.

Until next week, this is Chris Wassel signing off and good luck in your Fantasy leagues.
