The Wire Troll: Jaroslav Halak Hoarding Islander Crease

With multi-point efforts in three of his last four games, Pominville is off to a great start in his return to Buffalo, ranking 11th in scoring in the NHL. He enjoyed a nice bounce-back effort last year with 34 assists, but the way things are going early on, he’s on pace to threaten his career-best of 53 helpers set way back in 2007-08. Now a true leader on the young Sabres, he’s getting more minutes, so jump on him while you can as he won’t last long on the wire.

The Wire Troll: Dustin Brown Turns Back the Clock

Has Yakupov finally found a team for which he can live up to his first overall pick status? After seemingly bottoming out in his last season in Edmonton (.115 Corsi relative QoC, after .481 the season before), he sucked even more in his only season with the Blues, mustering fewer shots than games played. However, Yakupov seems revitalized in the early going with the Avalanche, ripping three goals and an assist in the last two games, and five points in four games overall. Get him on your team while you can, because something tells us he won’t last long on the wire.

The Wire Troll: Kyle Gibson Killing it for Twins

This young righty is starting to come into his own, hurling seven shutout innings in his most recent start. The Pirates’ ninth rounder in 2013, Kuhl is a sinkerball that knows how to generate plenty of groundballs — although his extreme groundball tendencies have neutralized the further he’s gotten along in the system. The good news is his strikeout rate has soared this year to the point he’s an asset, and he’s managed to shave six-tenths of a run off his ERA since late-July, making him a must-own NL-only league pitcher now.

The Wire Troll: Matt Andriese Returns to Rays Rotation

Yes, another Rays’ starter looms on the horizon in the form of former Padre Smith. He underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2015, and is still on the comeback trail, but his recent results suggest he’s ready for another crack at the Show. Smith hurled 5 2/3 shutout innings on Friday to earn the win at Triple-A, and he’s been lights out in three starts at Durham. He’s proven he can win in the minors again; now let’s see what he can do in the majors.

The Wire Troll: Chris Stewart Protecting the Pittsburgh Plate

His Fantasy value is still extremely limited, but if Olson keeps pitching like he has so far, that may soon change. He was having a nice season at Triple-A, going undefeated with a splendid 0.95 WHIP, but what he’s done with the Tribe has been very impressive so far. How about 15 appearances without an earned run allowed? A nice WHIP and fine K/BB rate suggest that Olson could move up in the Indian bullpen pecking order. The team is very pleased with his performance, and that could lead to more responsibilities and — ideally — more holds.

The Wire Troll: Scott Kingery Bucking for Promotion

Quietly, Cashner has strung together seven straight starts with three earned runs or fewer allowed. For a good chunk of this season, you started him at your own peril, but with the current run he’s on, he needs to not only be owned, but started in all formats. Cashner is getting groundballs at his highest rate since 2013 — his only double-digit win season. Yes, we know. It’s hard to believe a pitcher with his stuff has just one, but it looks like he may add to that total this season.
