Video Game Review: Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, Episode 3

Guardians of the Galaxy
Gamora and Nebula’s relationship is the heart of Episode 3.

Please note that since each episode of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series features the same graphics engine and control setup, those elements will not be repeated in our reviews for the final four episodes. To read our thoughts on that, refer to our review of Episode 1: Tangled Up In Blue.

Guardians of the Galaxy has been one of Telltale’s more successful forays into existing franchises, which says a lot considering how wildly popular the movie series is. The third episode, entitled More Than a Feeling, pushes the narrative forward while examining character relationships and backstory.

While the previous episode focused mostly on Rocket, this one explores Gamora and Nebula, along with a closer look at the rift between them. There’s a clever narrative technique here that portrays a single pivotal event from multiple points of view, greatly helping to provide some understanding behind the characters.

There’s some light exploration/puzzle solving as well, but unlike previous episodes, this section feels tacked on as it’s really just looking around.

At the same time, a lot of the conflicts in the series feel like they’re deliberately pushed to extremes to heighten the drama even though things could have easily been sorted out by, you know, simply having a conversation about things.

Then again, perhaps that fits in with the overall tone of the franchise given that the core team is four very emotionally stunted beings and a talking tree.

The episode is the midpoint of the series, which makes narrative sense given a huge decision towards the end. While so far decisions have only made individual characters a little grouchier or a little nicer (and we’re betting that Drax gets the spotlight in the next episode), this one feels like it will have some lasting impact.

It’s a welcome touch, because as breezy and fun as the series has been so far, we’re still waiting for it to have the usual consequences of Telltale choices. If the stakes and consequences escalate in the final two episodes of the series, then Guardians of the Galaxy will stand out as one of Telltale’s finer series in its catalog.

OVERALL (4/5)

Despite a relative lack of puzzle-style gameplay, More Than a Feeling is another fun mix of team shenanigans and character development. It also offers a narrative turning point that positions the series for a strong final two episodes.
