Fantasy Notes: Week Seven

October 19, 2008 | By RotoRob | comment on this post

Word spread quickly that New Orleans running back Reggie Bush had suffered a season-ending knee injury Sunday, but that’s apparently not the case.

We still don’t know exactly how bad he’s hurt, but should find out more Sunday night after he gets examined.

The fact that he walked off the field on his own is obviously a good sign.

Still, it’s crappy timing considering Bush was actually enjoying a good day, averaging 6.1 YPC for the game with 55 yards in total off of just nine totes. Breaking one run for a season-best 29 yard scamper sure helped in that regard.

With Bush possibly missing extended action, it’s time to give Deuce McAllister another look. He ran well Sunday after taking over for Bush, averaging 5.2 YPC, and taking one carry for a season-best 12 yards.

The Roy Williams era has started in Dallas, but it was a rather inauspicious beginning as the team was not only hammered 34-14 by a suddenly hot Rams team, but Williams was a bust, failing to catch a pass and only being targeted once by Brad Johnson, subbing for the injured Tony Romo.

Of course, given Johnson’s age, he has to throw everything short, and can’t take seven-stop dropbacks or else he get killed, so that was a factor.

Terrell Owens is still doing nothing, managing just 31 yards receiving on a pair of catches without a TD.

The word on the street is that Jerry Jones is trying to rush Romo back into action, so don’t be surprised if he’s back under centre next week at home against the Bucs.

I think Trent Edwards has shaken off the cobwebs. He was a stellar 25-of-30 for 261 yards, tossing one TD without a pick to lead the Bills past the frustrating Chargers. If you dumped Edwards, you better grab him back – especially with a date next week in Miami against a Dolphin team that can’t defend the pass.

With Chris Chambers sidelined, Malcom Floyd stepped up nicely for the Chargers, pulling in four passes for 65 yards and a score. He’s going to be getting more looks, with or without Chambers, but if Chambers is out again next week, Floyd has to be considered a sleeper.

It’s nearly time to consider Kyle Orton a must own fantasy QB. He did it again Sunday, completing 21-of-32 for 283 yards with two TDs and no interceptions as the Bears won a slugfest over the Vikes. Give Orton three straight solid performances.

Meanwhile, geriatric Gus Frerotte’s bubble finally burst after he was picked four times. He salvaged his day with a 25-for-40 performance for almost 300 yards and a couple of TDs, but this nice comeback tale may be nearing an end. We’ll see what he does at home next week against a Houston team that’s middling against the pass, but if you have a better option than Frerotte, you definitely want to exercise it.

Sure, no would could blame you if you cut him, but if you were one of the lucky ones who started Mewelde Moore Sunday, kudos to you. Starting in place of injured Willie Parker Sunday, Moore ran wild for 120 yards on just 20 carries and he hit paydirt three times – twice on the ground and once in the air (one of five receptions he had on the day).

Ohio native Ben Roesthlisberger is now 11-0 in his career when playing in either Cleveland or Cincinnati. Why, oh why, doesn’t Columbus have an NFL team, Big Ben must be wondering. I mean, what? Columbus can ostensibly support an NHL team, but not an NFL squad? Whatever.

Weren’t the Bengals good for a while? Since 1991, 18 teams have started 0-7 and five of those seasons belong to Cincy. Is Carson Palmer even going to play again this season? There doesn’t seem to be much point anymore, does there?

LenDale White enjoyed a breakout game for the undefeated Titans, rushing for 149 yards and three TDs. Hell, he even had a rare reception for seven yards. I like his chances next week at home against a Colts team that’s porous against the rush, so if he’s still out there, go ahead and grab White.

Not that you should care much at this point, but Brodie Croyle’s knee injury will cost him the remainder of the season. Damon Huard started Sunday, but he was awful and then got hurt late in the game as well, leaving the QB duties to Tyler Thigpen, who may suddenly be worth a flyer, should your league be, oh, say, 32 teams deep.

Have you been trying to figure out why you drafted Steven Jackson in the first round? Well, he threw you a bone this week, rushing for 160 yards and three TDs on 25 carries. The dude had crossed the goal line just once all year before this breakout. About freaking time, man, but probably too late to save his owners’ seasons.

The NFL’s top defense bounced back to help B-More snap a three-game losing skid as Terrell Suggs ran back an interception 44 yards for a TD while adding seven tackles and a sack.

Ronnie Brown, meanwhile, was completely neutralized. The fact that he was held to just 2.1 YPC wasn’t a shock, but he failed to score for the first time since the season’s opening week. Don’t worry, though; he gets a Denver team that’s very weak against the run next week.

After failing to score in the first two games of the season, Brandon Jacobs has now broken the goal line six times in the past four games. He enjoyed a respectable 69 yards on the ground, but his YPC would have been awful had it not been for a 26-yard scoring burst.

Didn’t the 49ers have designs on being a .500 club this year? Uh, yeah. After three turnovers, six sacks, a safety and 13 penalties for 134 yards directly led to 19 points for the Giants, San Francisco is now in deep trouble at 2-5.
