After going 1-0, 5.41 during Spring Training with the Yanks, he was assigned to High-A. He lasted just five starts there, recording a 1.80 ERA over 30 IP with only 19 hits allowed while fanning 30. Hughes was quickly ushered up to Double-A, where the prospects are separated from the projects. Well, he’s clearly a prospect: in 16 starts and 91 IP, he’s gone 6-3 and has allowed a mere 65 hits and five homers while striking out 106. He’s limiting opponents to a .199 average. Uh, yeah. If Hughes is not owned in your keeper league, you must pounce now. He could be ready to contribute in the majors next year.

Fantasy Notes: Healthy Hunter is Producing

Torii Hunter has been relatively healthy this year, on pace to play his most games in three seasons, and he’s responded with some solid totals. On Sunday, he extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-5 performance with a run and pair of RBI. Hunter was just a home run short of the cycle and has lifted his average from .269 to .280 during the run. Our chief complaint about him is the lack of steals — just six so far after topping 20 in each of the last two seasons, even last year when injuries held him under 100 games played.

The trade would definitely help his team win, but RotoRob had picked Jones right from the get-go, back in the day when he first formed his Fantasy team. There was some pride in that and loyalty to a player that — while the “manager” will never actually manage or even meet him — had provided nothing but season after season of payoffs in the pool.

A Look Ahead: Buehrle Purely for Bench

So we’ll need to see more to believe he’s out of his slump. Apparently, the problems have resulted because he’s been tipping his pitches. We wouldn’t want to risk it against a hungry Yankee squad and showing-no-signs-of-cracking Detroit team this week. That’s a tall order for Buehrle even if he were on his game, which he clearly hasn’t been in the last month (0-5, 11.48 in July).
