Best Conversation Ever Update: Time’s Ticking

February 25, 2011 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
Forner Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Bobby Orr was one of the all-time greats.
A conversation would Bobby Orr would be even more fun than gawking at his plaque on Canada’s Walk of Fame.

There’s only 11 more days left to get your entry in for WIND Mobile’s Best Conversation Ever contest.

To refresh the memory-challenged out there or to edify you newbies, this Canadian-only contest – of which I am not only the Canadian sports blog partner, but also a judge – asks the basic questions: If you could talk to anyone you wanted to, who would it be and why?

At last check, there were nearly 2,000 video and text entries on the site and from this enormous collection, the 100 entries with the most votes will be deemed finalists when the contest closes on March 7.

That’s when yours truly (and the rest of the bloggers/judges) will get to work and use a scorecard to help pick the five lucky winners from the finalists.

As a judge, my vote counts quite a bit, so if you’re desperate to win, may I suggest you sit on my casting couch? Okay, maybe not. But you still need to wow me, and one way to do that is by getting creative with how you garner votes for your entry.

For instance, the word on the street is that there’s an entrant that desperately wants to speak to actor Michael J. Fox and this person has offered to donate 50 cents to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for every vote they get. Not only is that a brilliant attention-grabbing idea, but it’s a win-win for the charity. Kudos to that entrant.

As we’ve discussed previously, contest includes a charity component. In addition to the $100,000 WIND will donate to the charity of the choice of the celebrities that the winners get to talk to, there’s another $100,000 being donated through voting.

Several charities have been very vigilant about drumming up votes for their causes, and why not? The top-ranked charity gets $50,000 and the next five get a cool 10 Gs each.

Some of the most creative charities so far have been the Schizophrenia Society, Engineers without Borders and Rabbit Rescue.

And don’t forget about the weekly extra contests: there’s a site participation draw every Tuesday, a Facebook contest every Wednesday and on Thursdays there’s the Twitter contest. For each of those contests, there’s a $100 Ticketmaster gift card up for grabs (which would allow you to buy about one-quarter of a ticket to the upcoming Glee shows at the ACC).

Since we last checked in, here are some of the sports-related figures that entrants are hoping to win a conversation with: Sidney Crosby (who still has time on his hands, so now would be a good time to chat with him), Bobby Orr (winner of a record eight Norris trophies as the NHL’s top defenseman), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (the most popular driver on the NASCAR circuit) and Joe Montana (not only one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, but a noted wine connoisseur/maker).
