The Wire Troll: Are you Down With Sam I Am?

November 10, 2007 | By James Morris | comment on this post

The waiver wire is the same in any league the first month of the season: very active! I’ve seen people drop all the usual suspects and pick up more of the same. So, where is the line between a normal waiver wire move and a smart fantasy play? Let’s see what they don’t see.

Sam Cassell: Sam I Am was available this morning in many of my leagues, and I even picked him up in a few. I cut loose Mo Williams because he just isn’t getting it done for me from night to night. If you have Williams or somehow the computer drafted Mike Bibby for you, I’d cut them loose in favour of Cassell now. The Clippers will fall off sooner or later, but I think Cassell should have a pretty good fantasy run this season, assuming he can avoid the injury issues that plagued him last year.

Kenyon Martin or Eduardo Najera: With Nene Hilario going down, that puts more pressure on both Martin and Najera to perform. K-Mart has two bad knees and Najara has a bad game, so both come with their downsides. However, that being said, both will see their minutes increase for a while, thus putting them on your fantasy radar. The ideal situation would be to get Martin and handcuff him with Najera, but no NBA fantasy teams should have enough space to make two moves, one of which will be just in case. Take Martin, but keep an eye on Najera.

Yi Jianlian: Yi has moved above Charlie Villanueva on the depth chart and the Bucks are going to play the big man this season. He is quickly getting snatched up in leagues as we speak, so if he is available, I would take baby Yao Ming now. I’m not just a client of Yi Jianlian, I’m an owner!
